5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Aisha “A. Life” Gant, author of Secret Wounds and Hidden Pain
(Eborya Publishing)
(One of the first ten people to comment on A. Life’s author interview will win a free copy of Secret Wounds and Hidden Pain.)
Secret Wounds and Hidden Pain is a novel about four women: Charlene, a church-going woman who is married to an adulterous preacher; Denise, an exotic dancer who eventually finds out her “best customer” holds the title of her rapist; Michelle, the wife of an abusive, jobless, porn addict; and Katrina, a successful businesswoman who secretly has abortions to maintain her status.
All of them lead totally different lives while unknowingly wearing the same mask. Each woman believes no one else can see or feel what she is going through. Each woman will individually find out that the painful wounds she is experiencing are deep enough to be seen and felt by the world.
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the idea and inspiration to write Secret Wounds and Hidden Pain?
A. Life: At first, the idea to write Secret Wounds and Hidden Pain came from within. Then I realized that the issues were globally problematic. Although the main characters in my book are women, men suffer from some of the same issues.
The main issue I speak of is the fact that we all, in some form or another, hide behind the walls of wounds (whether physical, emotional, etc.) in hopes that nobody sees or knows the truth behind the mask.
Joey Pinkney: What sets Secret Wounds and Hidden Pain apart from other novels in its genre?
AL: There are many Christian Fiction books available, and I have so many favorites that I can’t begin to name. However, after finishing them, I was left with nothing more than a good book. In my works, I set out to change that.
Not only will the reader have read a good book but will be inspired to change for the better. The reader will be able to relate to one or more of the characters. Since the lives of the characters are displayed from a painful start to a victorious finish, the reader can run with a renewed sense of victory.
Joey Pinkney: As an author, what are the keys to your success that lead to Secret Wounds and Hidden Pain getting out to the public?
AL: My keys are: “Whatever it takes!”, “Quitting IS NOT AN OPTION!” and “If it doesn’t, first, make me happy and, second, make me money-and in that order, I don’t do it!” But above all else, I sincerely believe that “With God, All things are Possible!”
Joey Pinkney: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take for you to start and finish Secret Wounds and Hidden Pain?
AL: For this particular book, it took a combined time of about 6-8 months because I wear so many hats. I do not write full-time, but I do write almost every day.
Joey Pinkney: What’s next for Aisha “A. Life” Gant?
AL: Aside from the fact that the next novel is always ready to explode out of my mental belly, I have completed the stage play for Secret Wounds and Hidden Pain and will continue to market the book and begin casting for the play. I do plan on two more releases for 2010.

Wow! That sounds like an interesting read. The title says it all- Secret Wounds And Hidden Pain. I agree- far too many folks walk in and out of church every Sunday and leave with the same pain they entered with because they won’t or can’t let those pains and wounds go.

Heeeey Maurice! Thank You So Much For Your Response and Comment. And You are sooo right! But to add to your comment of truth, this ever-existing problem happens not only in the church world but the secular world as well. It is much easier to cover a wound than it is to expose it. And Why? Fear! Shoot! Maurice, who ‘you know wanna walk around with an open wound showing, only to be repeatedly asked, ‘what happened?’ Ceertainly not me! LOL. You feel me? All I am saying and what I believe you are saying as well, is; Unless the mask/band-aid is removed, healing will never be able to properly take place. ;-)
(Keep me on my toes Maurice, I feel it coming on!) LOL -A.Life…

First, the cover is very riveting. Second, like Maurice said the title says it all. Third, I would love to read this book. I want to experience the message that Ms. Gant delivers to her readers through her characters. Pain is a very difficult thing to let go.

Miss Lady Jennifer! Thank You for the comments and compliments on my cover. I love it too girl. (LOL) And I want you to experience the message as well. Your last statement says it all and to mimic it, Pain is very much a difficult thing to let go. But in a sense, it is even harder to uphold. Pain is heavy; on your body, on your mind, and on your heart. And if you continue to hold onto it, it can and will kill you. Who likes pain? Uh? Not Me! And I know Not You! (LOL) Keep Me posted on your thoughts of the book when you read it. :-)

This sounds like an interesting book. So many people are hiding behind a lot of pain.

And right you are Ms. Rose! As I said before, it is not until we remove the masks, that we are able to heal. Thank You for your comment. I love it…they keep me going!;-)

Sounds like a great book, sounds like readers can somehow relate to one of the women in the book. Also shows that everyone has problems, the question is how we deal with them. Thanks Joey for helping authors get the word out on all the great books out there that we may overlook!!!

Janika, Guuuurl…say that! And yes, I believe everyone, male or female, can relate to one or more of the characters! That was and is my desired plan. Thank You Lady for your comment of Truth! Keep it up! ;-)

I think it is really brave to write a fictional work based on such little talked about and seldom fully addressed (in the Christian world) subjects. Normally, authors looking for publication under the Christian moniker stick with issues that are easily read or spiritually exciting or tantalizing… not morally and socially taboo.
I am extremely interested to see how honestly the author treats the characters’ internal struggles as well as how thoroughly she treats their individual processes to either cope with, rise above or justify their individual, self made worlds.
January 19th, 2010
WoW! Brian, I so Love You! (LOL) Naw, though I do,(’cause I wanna go to heb’m)LOL…What I really love is your verbally displayed truths.
Whew! Where do I start? Um? Brave? ;-)Though I never looked at that way, I appreciate that comment because in my first novel, I played it safe, but in this one, I pulled out all stops because I am tired of all the watering down of certain topics so they can be more socially accepted by man.(esp. in the Christian world).
Brian, what you will find in SWHP, is a BIG difference! And without giving away too much info, I will tell you, the R-Rated Real ‘disclaimer’ on the front is put there purposely! Man! You would not believe some of the responses I have gotten from ‘church folk’ because I let them know that the realness, included some profanity.LOL! I am not the ‘cussin’ type, but I wanted this book to be so real that EVERYONE who reads it will experience its truths and walk away having recieved the conveyed message.
After all bro’, He came to heal the sick…the ones that are ‘healed’ have no need of a physician! You feel me?…;-)

I am so excited about this book! There are sooo many people who walk around with ‘masks’ on hiding their pains. I am glad Ms. Aisha has written such a novel!
January 19th, 2010
And I am glad you Ms. Jennifer, are glad that I did too! LOL…And when you read my book, promise me you won’t share anything but order details.(LOL)(I’m working on bestseller status-and sharing won’t get me there!)LOL-I’m being silly, but really Jenn…The world needs to know that the pain will subside if the masks are removed. Thank You for your comments and I want you to shoot me a email and tell me what you think of the book after you read it. ;-)
Stay blessed Lady.

Honestly, I need to read this. To me, there is this major misunderstanding between the sexes that tends to subside whenever pampering is taking place then men and women are at each other’s throat. It goes in a circle forever. When the circle is cut and half, it is through breaking up and divorce. Why is it that in many cases cutting the circle in half is the healthiest choice to make? Probably because you won’t feel like you’re not going crazy anymore. But you ain’t heard that from me. Lol.
