5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Donnell Hicks, author of Lyric’s Song
The book “Lyric’s Song” is about a young 17-year-old who was given up at birth by his mother to be raised by his grandmother. Throughout Lyric’s life, he has been battled resentment, rage, anger, plus being sexually abused by a family member. When Lyric finds out a family secret that his grandmother and mother has been keeping away from him, it will either make Lyric stronger or break him completely.
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write “Lyric’s Song”?
Donnell Hicks: Well, I got the idea of the title “Lyric’s Song,” from watching a movie one night on Lifetime called “America”, starring Rosie O’ Donnell and Ruby Dee. At first, I was afraid to touch such a sensitive subject. I went ahead and pushed the fear aside simply to write the book and put my own spin on the story.
I wanted to change positions from writing urban street lit novels to penning a book aim to inspire others who see themselves as the main character or have gone through the similar situations as the main character.
JP: What sets “Lyric’s Song” apart from other books in the same genre?
DH: “Lyric’s Song” deals with situations any man or woman endures when they’re a youth. The characters I develop in the book are full of raw emotions. The reader can feel the same emotions as the main character. Plus, the book touches on sexual abuse, secrets, love and family.
JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to “Lyric’s Song” getting out to the public?
DH: Basically networking with other authors on social media outlets such as Facebook or Twitter and word-of-mouth. In other words, promotion is the main key to getting “Lyric’s Song” out to the public.
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish “Lyric’s Song”?
DH: First, I write outlines so that I can keep the story consistent and on point. Second, I attempt to pen a storyline for each character. Finally, I make sure to bring the each story line into one major plot.
For “Lyric’s Song”, it took me approximately six weeks to write the books given the fact I was engaged into the novel itself.
JP: What’s next for Donnell Hicks?
DH: The next big adventure in my life is that it is my only hope I can continue to develop and bring forth incredible stories for my readers. I have always been interested in producing stage plays, movies, a clothing line for urban youths, starting a community center for the urban youths, as well as being boss of my own publishing company.
Two years ago, I was signed to a publishing company. It ended on a bad note. At one point in my life, I didn’t know where I would end up or I had no clue how to proceed with my writing career. I was at crossroads, lost and delirious.
I kept my faith and the promise everything will be better and it had. I was blessed to have some amazing people in my life when I had began the journey of an independent author.
To anybody who may be down on their luck: NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS WHEN THE IMPOSSIBLE SEEM POSSIBLE. Thank you.
