5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Tallis Piaget, author of Black Boogiemen
If a person grows up in the inner city and works hard (good grades, goes to college, earns a substantial degree), the first action this person performs upon reaching a somewhat successful status is LEAVE. In turn the inner city loses its most important assets, leaving these areas lacking positive role models. Well, “Black Boogiemen” is a fictional story about a charismatic leader that unites all of these successful men, and forces them to return to the worse parts of the inner city to LIVE.
This covert team of men (Black Boogiemen) truly bring about change to the inner city. They first begin to affect the aesthetics, beautifying the neighborhoods. They revamp the educational system making it more conducive to the young urban mind. Finally, they get rid of all of the drug dealers and gangbangers, and they force every urban youth to pull their pants up (or else). Eventually, the inner city morphs into something comparable to a Utopian Society, free of the nefarious aspects that plague all poor urban areas.
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write “Black Boogiemen“?
Tallis Piaget: Being honest, I see the deplorable state of most inner cities throughout America. No matter what state we visit, their urban area is usually the place that contains a preponderance of criminal activity. I truly believe that if we as a people continue to neglect these areas, the places and the people will devolve to a place of no return. If action isn’t immediate, we will see the continued degradation of our people, our state, and our country.
JP: What sets “Black Boogiemen” apart from other books in the same genre?
TP: The idea is extremely original, and the methods used to bring about true and everlasting change are unheard of. Though people may have thought of the controversial premise, I had the courage to actually put the idea on paper.
JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to “Black Boogiemen” getting out to the public?
TP: I must admit, without proper marketing, it has been an arduous task getting “Black Boogmen” to the masses. But what has really helped is the quality of my material. People really love this book and consider it an instant classic, in turn word-of-mouth has been the most powerful tool used in helping me get my book to the public. So the major key is having a great book.
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish “Black Boogiemen”?
TP: My writing process is erratic, meaning it changes depending on my mood. As far as “Black Boogmen” is concerned, everyday I came home from my day job, I wrote feverishly for hours. I did this until I completed the entire book.
It took me approximately a year to write and then a year of editing before it was ready for publishing. So two years all together.
JP: What’s next for Tallis Piaget?
TP: Well, I will continue to be the executive editor of Insight2Incite magazine (I also write for the magazine), I am working on a sequel to “Black Boogiemen” and I am working on getting this story onto the silver screen. I am also working getting a radio show started.
