Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write Loyalty?

Tammy Capri: I love to write! I used to mainly write songs and submit then to major record companies. In 2011, I had a bad experience with submitting songs and decided to change my category of writing.

I am a big fan of urban fiction books, so I gave it a shot. I started writing an Urban story titled HBIC (Head Bitch in Charge) and the book sort of took a life of it own. Halfway into the story, I felt the name wasn’t the right fit for the story line, so I changed it and Loyalty was born.

JP: What sets Loyalty apart from other books in the same genre?

TC: I created my characters based on who I am. I have worn many hats in my life (some that I am not proud of), so I am able to use that as fuel to write Loyalty. Personal experience plays a big part in writing. Readers can tell when a writer has no idea what they are talking about. I don’t knock anyone’s style of writing, but I prefer to start off with personal experience.

JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to Loyalty getting out to the public?

TC: Dedication and hard work. I’m a new author and Loyalty was release on 3/23/12. I have already sold over 200 copies. To a more seasoned author, 200 is not a lot. To me, it shows me that my hard work is paying off.

JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish Loyalty?

TC: I started writing Loyalty in august 2011. I took a break in November when my second son was born. By that time, I had already written 17 chapters. When I resumed writing after christmas, I changed a few things including the name of my book and was done by mid-January. So I would say it took me a little over 3 months to write it.

JP: What’s next for Tammy Capri?

TC: I have Loyalty 2: Unfinished Business scheduled to come out this fall, and I am working on releasing two new authors under my publishing company.

Toye Lawson Brown, author of Nayla’s Dilemma – The Ends of Justice

This book is about a Senior Prosecuting Attorney who is working a high-profile case involving a Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge. Judge Henry Franklin suddenly finds himself the main suspect of his wife’s untimely death in Paris, France. Prosecuting Attorney, Nayla Smith, is on a mission to prove Judge Franklin was the mastermind behind the fatal accident and wants nothing more than to bring this man to justice.

Since Judge Franklin has status in the community and friends in high places, he feels he’s untouchable and maintains his alibi will be enough to prove his innocence. The more Nayla and her team of law enforcement agents dig into Judge Franklin’s past, she starts to unravel the Judge, causing him to take evasive action and start a personal counter attack on her.

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write Nayla’s Dilemma  -The Ends of Justice?

Toye Lawson Brown: Nayla’s Dilemma is the conclusion to my first book, Obsessive/Obsession. The inspiration for the development of this story came from an actual investigation involving a few local judges and county commission officers.

Although, these individuals were not accused of killing their spouses or anyone, I decided to make it more interesting and put in my own spin. Also, I work in the legal field and have access to many brilliant brains to pick.

JP: What sets Nayla’s Dilemma-The Ends of Justice apart from other books in the same genre?

TLB: I set myself apart from other books in this genre by how I intertwined elements. I want readers to be able to place themselves as doing what one or more of the characters are doing. I want them to live the adventure and not just read about the adventure. I believe I accomplished that.

JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to Nayla’s Dilemma-The Ends of Justice getting out to the public?

TLB: Self-promotion is hard and tedious. I hit the book fairs, did interviews. I had my family peddling my books to their friends. I gave away books as promotions to get myself noticed. Slowly, I started hearing people were reading this particular book and enjoying the storyline and asking when I would be writing more.

JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish Nayla’s Dilemma-The Ends of Justice?

TLB: To start, I need a good idea. Working in the legal field, I have endless brains to pick. Also, talking with people gives me scenarios. It’s putting all those great ideas together to make it work that take patience.

I start with my basic idea and work on character development. Since this book is part of a series (The Lofton Family Series), the main characters were there already. I had to throw in supporting characters to work with or against them that took most of my character development in this book.

Second, I work on atmosphere. Will the book be dark, humorous, enlightening, or have a message at the end? Once I decide that, I let my creativity flow. I don’t care for cliff-hangers, so I make my endings clear for the reader. I would hate for the reader to feel they wasted precious time by having to wait a year or more to find out what happened.

All the main character’s adventures are wrapped up accordingly and hopefully the reader is satisfied and will want to read more on this series when available. I believe it took me about five months to finish this book. I wanted to make sure the story flowed consistently before releasing it to the public.

JP: What’s next for Toye Lawson Brown?

TLB: Currently, I am working on my sixth book. Ultimately, I would love to be able to do this full-time and devout all my time to writing and bringing enjoyment to my readers.

H L Stampley: My son, whom I adopted and whom also was a victim of Shaken Baby Syndrome, inspired me to write this book.

JP: What sets A Fragile Child’s Cry apart from other books in the same genre?

HLS: I live the words on the pages. I had two biological siblings in my home and both were abused at the age of two months. Also, my wife and I fought the foster care system and the juvenile court system for nine years in order to save a life.

JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to A Fragile Child’s Cry getting out to the public?

HLS: An organization and individuals believing in me and my passion about this wonderful and compelling book that I have written.

JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish A Fragile Child’s Cry?

HLS: My writing process is simple: my memory and a tape recorder. A Fragile Child’s Cry took about a year to complete. The book first came out in 2008. It really didn’t emerge like I wanted it to, so I teamed up with an organization called Street Positive that believed in me and my cause about child abuse.

JP: What’s next for H L Stampley?

HLS: To continue to bring awareness to the forefront of America about the issues of child abuse and a broken foster care system.

JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish Direct Sales for the Single Mom?

CW: My process is from my heart, and it took me approximately three weeks to compose this book, cover to cover. The foreword was written by an author and friend, Mrs. Toni Coleman Brown, and the resources were gathered from my own personal arsenal of business building services.

CW: Next for me is the complete Single Mom to CEO Business Bootcamp to include webinar trainings, personal coaching, tour dates across the United States and a book deal with a major publishing company.

Makasha Dorsey, author of My Best Friend’s Brother

My Best Friend’s Brother (MyBFB) is about the dynamics of friendship when lifestyle choices don’t agree. Mikayla, a devout Christian who believes homosexuality is a sin, becomes best friends with Stacy Ann, a lesbian. She ends up leaving her church to join another during the process. The relationship changes when Mikayla starts dating Samuel, Stacy Ann’s twin brother.

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write My Best Friend’s Brother?

Makasha Dorsey: The inspiration to write MyBFB came from several places. I believe that there are various sins but also believe that you should hate the sin and not the sinner. There are also situations where we pass judgment without all of the facts and there are certain facts we may never know or force ourselves to understand. The inspiration for Stacy Ann and Samuel come from a few people I’ve met throughout my life.

JP: What sets My Best Friend’s Brother apart from other books in the same genre?

MD: My perception and reasoning is a little different from some Christian writers. I force myself to look at all perspectives in comparison to my own hermeneutics in relation to life and the bible. I constantly remind myself that Jesus taught in love and force myself to practice the same in my writing. I tend to be more critical of Christians than non-Christians. And, I like to believe that I express a unique voice in my writing.

JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to My Best Friend’s Brother getting out to the public?

MD: Relationships. My relationships have helped me to become a better writer. I participate in writing groups on and offline. Other writers critique my work, which is sometimes painful but enlightening. And, from those writing groups I’ve also learned about the resources necessary to become a successful writer—editors, writing programs, training, promotion opportunities, etc. These same relationships have been instrumental in helping me to get the word out about my book.

JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish My Best Friend’s Brother?

MD: My writing process changes with each project. However, I do use the 8-Point Arc and am a tool/application junky. I’m an organized, deliberate writer. For MyBFB, I had a dream, got up, and wrote the story. It was shelved for a few months and then I revisited the story when I wanted to submit it to an anthology. From conception to the first time it was printed in the anthology, I worked on it on and off for about 5 months. However, it took more than 5 years for me to publish the novelette on my own.

JP: What’s next for Makasha Dorsey?

MD: I know it sounds cliché, but I have several irons in the fire. My main project is my communications firm where I handle public relations for people and brands. However, I am working on a re-release of The Church House, my first novel, and I am working on a project to pitch to a few editors as I pursue becoming a traditionally published author.

DJ: I believe it’s my style of writing, flow and the level of suspense that A Small World carries.

JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to A Small World getting out to the public?

DJ: The main keys to my success on getting A Small World out to the public is the ability to embrace the process, overcome boredom, and the application of a high level of persistence and faith.

JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish A Small World?

DJ: I always start with pen or pencil on white paper. That is my first draft. When I type it into my laptop, that’s the second draft. Then I go over it, which is the third and final edit before professional editing takes place.

JP: What’s next for Derek Jordan?

DJ: I am currently penning my next novel, Next of Kin: A Small World 2 should be ready in 2014. Many more will come year after year. A poetry book is always in the works.

Mike Jefferies: Because of my love for Hip-Hop culture, inspiration to write this book came easily. I always wanted to pen a great story that took place in the heart of Hip-Hop. It just felt natural.

JP: What sets A Life For A Life apart from other books in the same genre?

MJ: I’ve never read a book with the main character so close to the industry. Also the incorporation of the white collar crimes along with the Hip-Hop scandals takes the reader to a different place while staying Urban at the same time.

JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to A Life For A Life getting out to the public?

MJ: Passion over everything! I stay true to my craft and genre. The first thing to do is write a good book! I don’t try to tackle fantasy, vampire books or murder mysteries because they make money. I write what I know: Urban Fiction. I focus on making easy-to-follow relatable plots my readers can’t put down.

JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish A Life For A Life?

MJ: I think of what topics are hot, then I visualize what characters would propel a good story. After settling on a good concept, I usually write out the first chapter and the last. Then, I go back and bridge the gap in between. I structure as much as I can along the way.

You’ll always get to use your intuitive gifts to color and dialogue as you go. By the time you reach the climax again, you’ll tweak it into the explosion you’d always hoped for. It took me about three months to finish A Life for a Life. If I have the full concept and stay at it until I chase the story out of my head, I have been known to pen a complete draft in as little as 26 days.

JP: What’s next for Mike Jefferies?

MJ: The sequel to A Life For A Life, subtitled The Ultimate Reality, is up next. It’s by far one of my favorite writes. Not only does the vicious and ongoing waxwar threaten to spill out of the booths and into the streets, but here you also get the full meaning of the title. It’s an unforgettable climax you won’t believe!

I have several other completed novels to follow. I don’t want to drop my hot title names just yet, but there’s a lot more drama and an epic erotic thriller that’s sure to be a banger!

I’m a constant work-in-progress and as long as my readers are feeling me and hitting me with reviews and fan mail, Ima’ keep puttin’ out. I want to be the author you can always depend on for relevant and hot new releases. Thanks for your support and reviews.

Sereniti Hall, author of Still Feenin’

Still Feenin’ is the sequel to the first novel that I wrote titled Feenin’, which was also published by Wahida Clark Presents. They both are about a young woman struggling to survive.

In the first novel, the main character is fighting a crack addiction. Still Feenin’ takes it to another level. In SF, she still has her temptations for crack, but she wants more out of life than what her past provided her.

Tanisha wants to be independent and maintain her sobriety. She also wants real love and friendship. SF shows how you can look for love and friends often in the wrong places. As humans, we take that chance and have to find out the hard way that every friendship is not worth pursuing.

Tanisha learns this quickly after being so naïve. Because of her past, she’s forced to fight for what she believes in while trying to keep the monkey and the haters off her back.

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write Still Feenin’?

Sereniti Hall: After I’d written my first novel, Feenin’, with the inspiration of my mom, my daughters, and reading Wahida’s Payback is a Mutha and having the mindset of not wasting my time in prison, I was on my way. Besides, felons don’t just come out of prison and get the best treatment, nor is it easy to find a job.

I have two little girls and one on the way that look to me for guidance. I needed a lifestyle change. I had to find a new hustle that would keep me positive and grounded. It’s been said that some things that we think are so bad in life can turn out to work for the good if we let it. That’s exactly what I did.

JP: What sets Still Feenin’ apart from other books in the same genre?

SH: Basically, all I can tell you is that I write about things I’ve seen growing up in the streets since I was twelve-years-old. I try my best to keep my writing as close to the street as possible while still entertaining my fans.

I’ve had people say to me, “I love your book because you keep it on a level where we can understand it.” Or they say, “Your novel helped me in ways that you will never know. I’ve been where some of your characters have been.”

When I hear people say things like this, it moves me inside in a special way. It also makes me feel that I’ve touched someone in one way or another and that I help people understand street lit who’ve never understood it before.

JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to Still Feenin’ getting out to the public?

SH: The help of a great publishing company that has a lead woman who understands where her authors come from. Hard work, dedication, persistence, and the Internet, which we have at out fingertips these days. Word-of-mouth, and most of all some serious motivation from my daughters.

I can’t leave out the fire that I have burning inside me to show my daughters that people do make mistakes, but people can also make a positive turn around.

JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish Still Feenin’?

SH: At one time my answer would be about a year, and this is for me personally. But after the editing, the rewrites, and the back and forth with the editor, it took me a little longer.

Since I am just starting out, there’s still so much about the craft that I can learn. I strive to get better, novel after novel as I dive deeper into my career.

JP: What’s next for Sereniti Hall?

SH: Hopefully, and if it’s God’s will, by next year this time my third novel will be released. I would tell you the name I chose, but I don’t know if my publisher would like me to reveal that. Besides, in this industry along with others, things tend to have their last minute changes. I do believe strongly that my fans will love it though.

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write Making Love Last?

L.A. Smith: My inspiration came early while reading great works from Edgar Allen Poe, Hemingway, and John Steinbeck. These authors could tell stories that made me wish I could be apart of the theme.

JP: What sets Making Love Last apart from other books in the same genre?

LAS: I’d like to think that my writing comes from the passion that I have within. Some erotica writers throw in a sex scene without setting the stage. My writing has a meaning and my readers are not surprised when two people meet up for an occasional roll in the hay. It’s expected at times and at others it becomes a welcoming act.

JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to Making Love Last getting out to the public?

LAS: I enjoy meeting new people and talking with them about them and then it’s time to turn the table. It’s my opportunity to tell them about my titles, give out a bookmark and business card.

JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish Making Love Last?

L.A.: I don’t have a specific process because I write everyday. There’s always some idea lingering around in my head that needs to put on paper. Not everything I jot down goes into a story but for the most part it generally is a starting point for my next writing.

It took three months from start to finish for my first story Love ‘n Time because I knew what I wanted it to be about. I’m working on a story now that I started 3 years ago. I have it in a very rough stage but it’s only 80% complete.

Why the delay? Time and other writing projects caused me to place this one on the back burner.

JP: What’s next for L.A. Smith?

LAS: I’m releasing an anthology Rendezvous: Guiltless Pleasures with 2 other others in April 2012. It contains four short stories of love, lust, and passion. The authors donated their short stories to the Black Angle Publishers’ Secret Santa fund. It is a service where we provide toys and clothes to less fortunate children around Christmas time. All proceeds from the sale of this anthology will go to that effort.

I plan to finalize When Love Calls and release it in September 2012.

Angel Bearfield, author of Child Support

Child Support is a drama-filled shocker that has two stories that are based from a man and woman’s point of view on how child support has affected their lives.

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write Child Support?

Angel Bearfield: I got the inspiration to write Child Support after witnessing a few incidents on child support issues and after reading a few articles. I was always aware of how child support can affect an individual financially.

What people don’t always see are the events that lead up to that very thing. That is what I’m offering my readers with Child Support, a chance to witness the how and why.

JP: What sets Child Support apart from other books in the same genre?

AB: I believe what sets Child Support apart from others is how the story is told from both genders, but from different outlooks. It was designed to take the readers on a journey that would satisfy their curiosity, while still leaving them to wonder “why” and “what if”. The characters alone will push the readers to cast judgment emotionally while fulfilling their need for drama and the always desired “happy ending.”

JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to Child Support getting out to the public?

AB: I am a self-published author, so that means I do everything myself. I don’t have a publicist, so all the marketing is done by me. I believe the one thing that led to Child Support getting out to the public was making the book seen and then responding to readers when they comment or email me. I absolutely love when a reader contacts me and we have a little chat. If they can take the time to buy and read my book, then I can take the time to respond to their comments and chat a while.

JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish Child Support?

AB: After focusing on how I want the book to make readers feel, I visualize it from the beginning to the end while taking notes. When I’m done, I have a complete outline ready to be written. I then do a little research to make my settings and characters stand out. I also like blending styles, such as romance with erotica. It’s like giving the reader a little something extra. In the end, it took me six months to complete Child Support.

JP: What’s next for Angel Bearfield?

AB: I’m actually in the process of writing Vol 2 of The Tase Men Series. The book is titled Winter’s Heat, and it will be based on one of the brother’s from my first novel, Loving Rainy Days. I have gotten a ton of emails and comments suggesting (and demanding) that I write about each of the Tase men. So basically, I will be giving the readers what they want.
