Cynthia Miller, author of In Rare Form

In Rare Form is the true story of two children age 5 and 6 that survived a horrific crime in 1986. It is also the story of the mother that gave them the strength to survive the aftermath.

The story takes you on the journey of their lives. The poetry in this story will make you smile. The children in this story will make you cry. And the mother in this story will make you stand up and cheer to the finish line.

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write In Rare Form?

Cynthia Miller: Watching crime channels.

I wanted my audience to walk inside the shoes of a family after the crime. After the horrific tragedy that is shown on Dateline. After the assailant is sentenced on American Justice. And after the tears are spilled on I Survived. I wanted to tell the story.

When I first started writing the story, I was incarcerated. I shared my first few chapters with other women and when they started to share their story with me. I knew then that this book could actually save lives. I became determined at that point to tell my story In Rare Form…

JP: What sets In Rare Form apart from other books in the same genre?

CM: My book starts each pertinent chapter with a poem that throws you right into the thick of things. My book is also an in-depth look into the mind of an addict from an addicts point-of-view. It breathes the fight and plight of the family.

My story is not a sad one however. It is simply told In Rare Form. It tells it from all sides. It tells the crime from the eyes of a child. And my story will inspire any child to reach for the stars. This is indeed a story that needs to be heard. My book is like no other because it is tastefully told In Rare Form.

JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to In Rare Form getting out to the public?

CM: I dedicated my book to all the mothers struggling with addiction and pain, also their children. My desire to reach them with my story drives me to get it in as many hands as possible. One way I do this is by holding poetry workshops for elementary school students.

I created a program entitled “Poetry In Motion.” This allows children to reach out to me and creatively deal with pain. I also do speaking engagements everywhere. From the rooms of NA, to fundraisers at the Police Department. I put myself out to the public, and I also make myself available for victims and survivors to personally contact me.

This has greatly helped in me getting my book out. And it doesn’t hurt to give a few away. Some of my biggest supporters are women who I gave a book to in their darkest hour. Now that they are living in the plight, they buy them for their friends.

JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish In Rare Form?

CM: These days, I am free. My goals are no longer sleeping inside my dreams behind bars. So my writing process has taken a new direction. I still fuel my creative works with the faces of all the women I have come in contact with that are fighting to get out of the darkness of the tunnels where addiction and pain live. So, I go outside on my patio and look at the beautiful painting in the sky and I am in awe each time. After that I ride that awesome feeling into my room turn on some music loudly and write.

In Rare Form took me approximately a year to write. I started it in bondage and appropriately I finished it outside the walls.

JP: What’s next for Cynthia Miller?

CM: I just completed my second book entitled On Rare Occasions. This is a book filled with short stories of
women who have made it to the top in some very unconventional ways and the regrets they sometimes
feel On Rare Occasions.

I am now working on a book entitled Position One. The story of a little girl who dared to dream.

My goal for 2012 is to reach as many women and children in bondage as I can. I want to help victims to
become survivor’s one book at a time…
