JoeyPinkney.com Exclusive Interview
5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Dellani Oakes, author of Lone Wolf
(Second Wind Publishing)
It’s 3032 and mankind has expanded into the universe. Guilds control much of the resources. Trimagnite is the most important of all. The Mining Guild has it. The Navigation Guild wants it.
Finding a huge source is important to John Riley, but not as important as making his father pay for abandoning him. Wil VanLipsig and Matilda Dulac don’t know Riley is Wil’s son. They see him as a crazed lunatic bent on mass murder and must chase him across the universe to stop him.
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write Lone Wolf?
Dellani Oakes: From a role-playing game called “Traveler” that’s set in a sci-fi setting. The three main characters of Marc, Wil and Matilda were based on three characters from a game we played.
JP: What sets Lone Wolf apart from other books in the same genre?
DO: Although they are pursuing a man bent on galactic destruction, his real motives are much more personal. Lone Wolf deals with loss and abandonment as much as it does greed.
JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to Lone Wolf getting out to the public?
DO: Getting people to know about it. If they don’t know it exists, how can they buy it?
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish Lone Wolf?
DO: I’m rather a random, chaotic writer. I start with an idea and develop my characters and setting. Once they’re in place, I follow their lead and see where I end up.
Lone Wolf took about six months to write, but nearly two years to edit into something I felt worthy of publication. Some novels, like my historical romance, Indian Summer, take longer. Others I’ve written in a matter of days. It depends on the story and how much it compels me to write.
JP: What’s next for Dellani Oakes?
DO: I’m working on editing the second novel in the Lone Wolf series. We’re hoping to have it ready for beach season.
I’m also working on a sequel to Indian Summer as well as a variety of other novels. I always have at least three projects going at once.
