5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Audrey McKay, author of Enough Good News
(Two Shoes Publishing House)
Sidra Lyons has it all: a great family, a wonderful life, and a new relationship with an amazing man. Life for her is pure bliss and she doesn’t think God could bless her any better if He tried.
When the father she’s had little contact with over the last 30 years shows up and announces he has a daughter from a previous relationship, a relationship he had while married to her mother, Sidra’s life begins to take some interesting turns.
The sisters embark on a journey of love and self-discovery. Will they be able to look past their differences and form a real family? Only time will tell…
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write Enough Good News?
Audrey McKay: I was on a business trip in California, where I was born, and they made an announcement in the airport for ANDREA McKay. Because people, for some reason, have had trouble with AUDREY for most of my life, I got up to make sure they weren’t calling for me.
They weren’t, but it got me to thinking. What if I had a sister out there that I knew nothing about? My imagination got involved, and a book was born. Enough Good News is the first book in the Good News Series. No Weapon, the second book, picks up with the sister’s story. Blind Justice and Long Night are books three and four.
JP: What sets Enough Good News apart from other books in the same genre?
A.M.: My books focus on using spiritual gifts in one’s Christian life. I felt like most of the Christian books I was reading were focusing on some woman trying to steal the pastor or some other man away from his wife.
And that’s fine, because it does happen, but I was wondering where were the books talking about the power we have in God. I try to focus on characters who are really trying to live for God. Even when they mess, up, they’re coming from a good place and operating out of a good heart.
JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to Enough Good News getting out to the public?
A.M.: I think perseverance is key. Once you start, you can’t get discouraged because things aren’t going the way you expected and stop. You have to keep pushing and trying to make yourself better. Surround yourself with people who love you enough to tell you the truth and keep moving forward.
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish Enough Good News?
A.M.: This sounds crazy, but it took me seven years from the time I started writing my first book until I got the copy in my hand. A lot of that was wasted time because I wasn’t sure what to do. Once I did the research, it was easier to walk through the process. Now I’m trying to put out books every six months.
JP: What’s next for Audrey McKay?
A.M.: Well, I just put out book number four in the series, so books number five and six are due this year. Eventually, I want to make the books into movies.
