5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Elaine Flowers, author of I Wouldn’t Mind Having a Husband, I Just Don’t Want to Be Somebody’s Wife: The Single Woman’s Guide to Self-fulfillment
(Top Shelf Publishing)
This book was written for the scores of single-never-been-married women who are desperately seeking marriage. Are they aware of what being a man’s wife really means? Are they prepared for a husband? If they knew what it really meant to be a wife, would they still want it? This book will advise single women on how to answer these questions and more for themselves.
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write I Wouldn’t Mind Having a Husband, I Just Don’t Want to Be Somebody’s Wife: The Single Woman’s Guide to Self-fulfillment?
Elaine Flowers: As a hairstylist, I listened constantly to my female clients complain about wanting to be married. I thought, they have no idea how difficult it is to be a wife. Otherwise, they would be spending their time enjoying their freedom.
There is nothing wrong with being married or desiring marriage, but the obsession some women have tells me that they think being married is like being on a life-long date. They are so wrong!
JP: What sets I Wouldn’t Mind Having a Husband, I Just Don’t Want to Be Somebody’s Wife: The Single Woman’s Guide to Self-fulfillment apart from other books in the same genre?
EF: Most non-fiction books about relationships are geared towards telling women what they are doing wrong and how they need to fix themselves in order to get or hold on to their man. My book is to help single women realize that they are most likely at the best time in their lives.
They should embrace it until the time comes when they are bogged down with the responsibilities of being a wife rather than spend their days depressed thinking that there is something wrong with them because they haven’t married yet. There is also advice on how to prepare themselves for marriage.
JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to I Wouldn’t Mind Having a Husband, I Just Don’t Want to Be Somebody’s Wife: The Single Woman’s Guide to Self-fulfillment getting out to the public?
EF: Living in a day and time where information is dispersed almost immediately, I am thankful for the Internet which has made it a lot easier to reach my readership in an effective way.
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish I Wouldn’t Mind Having a Husband, I Just Don’t Want to Be Somebody’s Wife: The Single Woman’s Guide to Self-fulfillment?
EF: I am a full-time writer, so I do my best to write everyday. All of my books have taken different spans of time from beginning, to finished, to published. The title, “I Wouldn’t Mind Having a Husband, I Just Don’t Want to Be Somebody’s Wife” is something I used to say after I was divorced and struggles of being a single parent were weighing in.
But as I continued to hear single women complain about being single, I realized that they wanted to be married for selfish reasons like myself. And that’s when the book started writing itself. I surveyed single, married, and divorced women. In the span of a year and a half, the book was completed.
JP: What’s next for Elaine Flowers?
EF: I have so many things that I am working on that I’m not sure what will happen next, but I am hoping to have my next fiction title published before the summer of 2012. I will reveal its title soon.
