5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Kiniesha Gayle, author of King of Spades
(KG Publishing)
King of Spades is a gripping tale of one man’s struggle to break away from his sordid past and a mysterious woman’s search for justice which lands everyone in her path on deadly grounds.
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write King of Spades?
Kiniesha Gayle: Well, my inspiration for writing books wasn’t formed until one day I was sitting in Cross County Mall in Yonkers, NY, reading B-More Careful while waiting to start my shift at Macy’s. While reading the book, ideas began to float around in my head.
After completing the book, I told myself that I want to write a novel. I just ran with the idea from there, thus giving birth to King of Spades. My passion for writing was developed when I was nine years old. At that age, I was writing poetry, and acting in school plays.
JP: What sets King of Spades apart from other books in the same genre?
KG: At the time I wrote King of Spades which was in 2004, a lot of the lead characters were men in the books I read. The women were either the wife or the mistress. I decided I wanted to do something different. I decided to make my lead character a female, a female that was capable of doing what male characters in prior books did. I wasn’t sure if would work, but readers gravitated towards it.
JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to King of Spades getting out to the public?
KG: Determination, and knowing that “no” is often not the last answer. I was determined that I was going to get King of Spades published and despite the no(s) I received or the frowns on the book. I told myself I would not take no for an answer and just kept going until my book was published.
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish King of Spades?
KG: Ironically, I don’t have a writing process. I just go by inspiration, or nature, as Williams Wordsworth would always say. I could be driving, and passing a building and an inspiration for my next chapter will pop in my head. Immediately, I will take out my cellphone, and record what I have to say.
There are also times, when I am preparing to go to bed, place my head on the pillow, ready to close my eyes, and an idea pops in my head. I have to immediately, get up and jot in down in my cellphone, or on my kindle. King of Spades took me nine months to finish, only because I was working on my Bachelors Degree.
JP: What’s next for Kiniesha Gayle?
KG: Well, I am currently working on my first contemporary fiction titled Franklin Lakes, a few short stories, and looking to publish two authors that have submitted their manuscripts.
