5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Ruby S. Garnett, author of Soul Sacrifice: One Story of Many
(AuthorHouse)

“Soul Sacrifice” is a shockingly true account of part of my adolescence and early adulthood living as as a Muslim woman and one of the wives of Malachi York, leader of what is now called The Nuwabian Nation – one of the nations largest cults. He was given one of the stiffest penalties for child sexual abuse in history.

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write “Soul Sacrifice: One Story of Many”?

Ruby S. Garnett: I began writing “Soul Sacrifice” for therapeutic reasons until I continued to hear how the victims were being called liars and were pressured to legally retract their statements. I wanted to defend the children who are still suffering from this, and I want to help them to heal somehow.

JP: What sets Soul Sacrifice: One Story of Many apart from other books in the same genre?

RG: No one from the cult has ever written a personal account of their experience that has been publicized. No one really knows the kind of life we were living in there. “Soul Sacrifice” is a conversation directed at the reader.

JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to Soul Sacrifice: One Story of Many getting out to the public?

RG: Perseverance, determination to get “Soul Sacrifice” out, and discipline to follow through.

JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish Soul Sacrifice: One Story of Many?

RG: “Soul Sacrifice” took a long time – beginning to end. I was initially (from ’93-’06 ) writing in personal journals. Then between( ’07-’12) I began to type the story and with encouragement of a really good friend and family, I saved enough money to self-publish.

I first visualized how and at what point of my life I should begin the story I wanted to share. Once I began, I’d dedicate at least 15 minutes or more each day to writing something.

JP: What’s next for Ruby S. Garnett?

RG: Next is finishing “Picking Up a Thousand Pieces”. I’ve gone through so much since I left the cult. I’ve learned so many lessons that I want to share with others. If I can help someone else, then I’ve served a great purpose in this life.
