JoeyPinkney.com Exclusive Interview
5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Ibitola Ojoye-Adebayo, author of Acceptance
(Completely Novel)
“Acceptance” is about a young woman named Eva. She finds having some form of relationship with her mother utterly impossible. She struggles to know why her mother has never shown any ounce of love towards her.
Eva ends up falling in love a guy named Richard. Meeting him was like fulfilling her dreams. Meeting him and swimming in his undying love meant she would never stumble in the dark. If she got lost, he would be the light that lead her.
But all that soon changed, and her world started to fall apart…
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write “Acceptance”?
Ibitola Ojoye-Adebayo: The inspiration came upon me when things were tough in my relationship . Having also just given birth to my first child, l thought the whole world had gotten into a tiny box with me and was squeezing me in. I just couldn’t breath.
One day l was reading an article in a magazine which talked about the different forms of therapy. The one that caught my eye was writing your thoughts and feelings down and de-cluttering your brain from unnecessary things that shouldn’t be controlling your life.
I started doing applying this technique that very day. l just kept writing and writing every spare moment l got. By the time l reached Chapter 9 of “Acceptance”, I couldn’t believe I was actually writing a book. I started feeling very lighter and happier.
JP: What sets “Acceptance” apart from other books in the same genre?
IOA: “Acceptance” is unique when it comes to comparing it to other books in the same genre. It speaks a lot to most young girls, young adults and women especially in many African and Asian cultures. It tells of a non existent relationship between mother and daughter. “The mother-daughter relationship is the most powerful bond in the world, for better or for worse. It sets the stage for all other relationships.”
“Acceptance” touches on many issues that people deal with in life, it is gripping and intense. Just when you think you know which direction it is going, the book catapults another direction. You get a little bit of everything with “Acceptance”. How many books can be classed in several genres… dramatic, romance, suspense and thriller?
JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to “Acceptance” getting out to the public?
IOA: I would say the key to my success is having a loving partner who has always supported me in everything l do. Whatever new idea I come up with – trust me there are many – he has always been ready to help me and give me advise. Also having a wonderful family (father, mother and siblings) has supported me a great deal and helped a lot.
Finally when l look into the eyes of my three little girls and see the dependence on me, it pushes me to try harder in what ever l lay my hands on and try to make it a success. So at least when they look back at my life after I’ve gone to the great father above they can be proud of what Mummy had accomplished in her life.
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish “Acceptance”?
IOA: Well, this is a tricky question. l cannot put a rough estimate to how long it took. I started “Acceptance” back in the summer of 2007 and worked on it for about 6 months. Writing this book was a form of therapy for me. There was lot of things happening in my relationship back then.
By the end of the 6th month, l was feeling a lot better and more accepting a lot of things happening around me. I eventually locked “Acceptance” away. The book had always been at the back of my mind to finish someday as it had gone down a totally different path to what the original story was.
Last year, my partner and l decided to get married this year. I was scanning my brain for something special to do for him. I decided to complete “Acceptance” and dedicate it to him on our wedding day. Without him, the start and the end of the book wouldn’t be possible.
His love and support gave me the drive to pick up the pace on this book January this year. I worked on it for 6 more months. There was a lot of writing and re-writing on my train journeys to work just to get it perfect so that it could be released on our wedding day.
JP: What’s next for Ibitola Ojoye-Adebayo?
IOA: I will be working on finishing the sequel to “Acceptance”. Hoping to get it ready for next summer.
