5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Mimi Renee, author of Deadly Decisions
(Johnson Publications)

Mimi explores every day living in the life of a hustler. She expresses the known gang problem that has been televised and depicted in stories such as Boyz N Da Hood. This street tale told through the eyes of Keisha Cones is of dishonesty, fast living and the affects of gang banging informs as well as entertains.

Being from California Mimi, describes this gangster life so vividly in Deadly Decisions – the highs and the lows of hustling and the gang life.

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the idea and inspiration to write Deadly Decisions?

Mimi Renee: After reading lots of books, I was inspired to write a tale that took place out of the West Coast for a change. Compton, California,  to be exact. I felt it was something that the industry was missing, and I wanted to be a part of the movement in filling bookshelves nationwide with West Coast flare.

JP: Deadly Decisions shows how love and complicate and blur the lines in dealing with people from rival gangs, in this case Bloods and Crips. What are some of the insights the your readers will gain from seeing Keisha Cones falling in love with archenemies?

MR: I think most people will understand how and why Keisha will end up in her position. But, most will dislike her for it…especially being that she’s a young woman.

JP: What has been the most shocking reader reaction to Deadly Decisions? How did that broaden your perspective on what this novel can mean?

MR: I’ve turned a few non readers into readers. Other then that, I haven’t received any shocking feed back on Deadly Decisions to tell you the truth. Most readers either loved or hated Keisha by the end of the book. Overall, I have gotten great feed back from readers all over the country.

Question 4: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take for you to start and finish Deadly Decisions?

MR: My writing process isn’t like most writer’s that I have spoken to. I don’t do outlines or anything like that. When I get in the mood to write, which is almost all the time, the story just flows. Like a free style rapper. I honestly surprise myself with the things I come up with sometimes.

JP: What’s next for Mimi Renee?

MR: The sequel of Deadly Decision is up next. Keisha Cones, (Living the Life) followed up with back-to-back titles. I have books lined up to be published right now, and I’m so excited and eager to share both my craft and growth with readers nationwide!
