5 Minutes, 5 Questions With… MQW, author of Entrepreneur II

JoeyPinkney.com Exclusive Interview
5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
MQW, author of Entrepreneur II
(5ive Star Publications)

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the idea and inspiration to write Entrepreneur II?

MQW: It came out of nowhere, actually. When I wrote Entrepreneur part one I didn’t intend to write a sequel. The more I thought about it, the more it made sense. It had a natural progression. It wasn’t forced at all. Now if it was forced, I wasn’t going to do in the first place.

JP: What sets Entrepreneur II apart from other novels in its genre?

MQW: I think most people will be able to relate to the main character Swift a lot. He’s a normal guy with normal problems, and the brotherhood between he and his friend best friend Block is heartwarming. Also, I touch on the topic of absentee fathers and how it can still affect you as an adult.

JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that lead to Entrepreneur II getting out to the public?

MQW: Persistence. As they say, you have to pound the pavement. Being an independent author, you have to constantly keep your work in front of potential readers, utilize any type of free marketing you can and I do as many book signings that time permits me to do.

It’s a constant grind to convince someone in 30 seconds flat why they should give you 15 dollars for your book. The answer better be good, too, or they will walk away from you. Lastly, you have to keep fresh marketing ideas that will leave an impression on the consumer.

JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take for you to start and finish Entrepreneur II?

MQW: It takes probably 6 months to a year for me to complete a project depending on what it is. With part two it was probably closer to 6 months. My writing process is having the living room be completely quiet so I can concentrate as much as I can.

I write in blocks too. I’ll get an idea in the supermarket, type it in my blackberry, email it to myself then copy and paste it to the word doc I’m working on. I’m really at my best after midnight or sitting in Borders with some type of coffee product.

JP: What’s next for Markeise Q. Washington?

MQW: A lot. As a company, we have a few untitled projects scheduled for next year. I’m going to start on a short story collection myself. That is something I’ve been pushing back forever, so I really want to get that off the ground.

Also, we have Amore’s freshman novel: The Temptation of Love coming in 2011. I just want to put out quality product that readers can appreciate.

  8. I had the privilege of reading MQW’s initial debut, Entrepeneur and it was great work. I’m sure with his work ethic and ear to the street, part II will either match or most likely surpass the original. Good work!
