JoeyPinkney.com Exclusive Interview
5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Abigail Ekue, editor of The Darker Side of Lust
(Native Creative Press)
The Darker Side of Lust is a collection of sixteen erotic short stories. The collection is broken down into three parts – Feel, The Storm and Sweet Syrup.
“Feel” explores relationships that aren’t exactly what they seem (adultery, sexless marriages).
“The Storm” includes stories where the sex is sudden, unexpected or taboo; stormy relationships and encounters (abuse, religion, death, fantasy).
“Sweet Syrup” houses stories where the characters get to fulfill their fantasies (massage, threesomes, bisexuality, voyeurism) or act on impulses.
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the idea and inspiration to write The Darker Side of Lust?
Abigail Ekue: The idea for The Darker Side of Lust became tangible in mid-2009. I had been participating in UrbanErotika and gained a following. I had fewer than sixteen stories at that time.
With a few more, I could get a solid collection of erotic fiction. Each story was inspired by a real-life experience or character, an image or the theme itself.
JP: What sets The Darker Side of Lust apart from other novels in its genre?
AE: The themes I address are what set The Darker Side of Lust apart. I don’t shy away from dark subject matters or themes and situations that may make the reader uncomfortable.
Although there are play-by-play scenes, I also allow my characters to tell their stories; their fantasies speak to the readers.
I don’t “dumb down” the dialogue or the narration. The stories of the erotic collection aren’t all linear. Happy endings do not dominate the short stories in “The Darker Side of Lust”.
JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that lead to The Darker Side of Lust getting out to the public?
AE: Perserverance. Just keep pushing. Network. Become an expert in your field. It’ll lend more credibility to your words whether they’re fiction or non-fiction. I let everyone know I’m an author.
Sex and erotica are polarizing topics–you either love it or hate it. It’s not uncommon for me to encounter those who love it in private and those who hate it in public. So despite the response I may get, self-confidence and confidence in my work are definite keys to success.
Respect for myself and work and respect for those I expose my work to are keys to success as well. Leave an impression on someone, and they’re sure to tell a friend.
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take for you to start and finish The Darker Side of Lust?
AE: My writing process is very simple. I write when I’m inspired. I get comfy on the couch, in the bed or on the floor with my notebook and pen. My ideas flow easiest that way. Then I transcribe what I’ve written, print it out and read it through for the first time and make any edits that may be needed.
If I need to research anything, I do that before I start writing or during the editing process. I’m very objective with my work.
The majority of the stories for The Darker Side of Lust were written/edited in the summer of 2009. So the entire process–writing, editing, book layout, cover design–was complete by December 2009.
JP: What’s next for Abigail Ekue?
AE: More writing in all my disciplines–short stories, personal essays, non-fiction. I’ll complete my novel, Letters to My Former Self and another erotic collection, hopefully featuring other writers. I will also continue with my photography. That is another form of storytelling I enjoy.

Dayum…. im soooo intriqued n even if I don’t win a copy I will definitely go buy this… I like how she base her stories off what’s really goin on n not afraid of goin nor into da erotics side n not sugar coating it like some authors do. Definitely luvin dis interview… ty for introducing me to another author…
(trying again)
Loving the interview. Its good to see a writer step outside the box and doing what she loves. A lot of people try to stay in the comfort zone or think if they write something else – that their readers will not be behind them — a true reader/supporter will be behind you regardless and offer you feedback and advice for next go round. Definitely got a fan in me — i hope to be checking this out soon!
Thanks again Joey for a great interview and introducing me to another great author.

This is always a great topic to discuss. I am interested in reading more about what she has to say! Great interview. It has me wanting more…
This author seems sincere and comfortable with herself and inner emotions. I would love to see how she interprets each aspect of all sexualities.
