Joey Pinkney: At what point did you know that you wanted to be in the entertainment industry in the capacity of an entertainment journalist?
Stylista KT: As a child, I would say that I got hit with the entertainment bug. Looking back on my childhood, I remember always loving to dance, watching award shows and writing. As a journalist, I believe it hit me when I was attending college at MTSU, where I studied print journalism. During that time frame, I became involved with the student newspaper where I wrote feature, fashion and lifestyle type stories.
In 2009, my major stepping stone came full circle and allowed me to kick off my entertainment writing was when I was offered a position with Examiner.com as a Nashville Celebrity Headlines journalist. It was a blessing from God in my eyes and lined me up with some great opportunities and networks. I thank God that he ordered my steps and set up the foundation to build my vision in entertainment journalism.
JP: Entertainment Journalism has a reputation of being an easy field to cover because it’s more about hype than substance. What do you do to make sure that you bring out things that are of substance when dealing with the latest in the entertainment industry?
KT: In my eyes, I definitely see entertainment journalism as “substance.” It may look or sound like an easy job, however there is a lot of planning, time, research and concentration that goes into making yourself a good respectable journalist. I truly Eat, Sleep and Breathe entertainment 24/7 from the time I wake up in the morning until I go to bed.
I definitely believe in researching individuals or having some awareness of what they’re about before I interview. On a personal note, whenever I interview any celebrity I make it a point to ask questions that make them think outside their comfort zone or the normal questions they get.
For example, when I interviewed Tatayna Ali I asked her, “If you had a once in a lifetime opportunity to change the world what or how would you do it?” Continue reading on Examiner.com: http://h1t.it/fR4S07
In a sense, I strive to build relationships, establish good credibility with my client or celebrity I work with on interview, network and offer my own personal flavor with my interview. I’m a brand at the end of the day, and I want people to know my work, provide feedback/comments and love my interview or article, which is my product.
JP: They say, “You should ever meet your heroes…” with the idea that they don’t end up being what their image and reputation has made them to be. Who have you come across during your journey that has really lived up to or exceeded your expectations?
KT: During my pursuit of happiness with my writing, I actually was blessed with a golden opportunity on Oct. 22, 2010, to meet a man by the name of Cordozar Calvin Broadus who the world knows as Snoop Dogg at the Vanderbilt Quake Concert here in Nashville, TN. I have really had a deep love and respect for since I was a child who grew up on West Coast music around the age of 9, around “The Chronic” days.
It was a dream come true for me because I had seen him in concert before, and I had always wanted to meet him up close and personal. When I met him, he was very down to earth, laid back, smooth and funny just like I always thought he would be. He exceeded my expectations because I actually got to hang out with him backstage in his room with his DPG crew, manager and fans.
It was a MAJOR EXPERIENCE for me! I presented him a birthday present since his birthday was a few days before the concert. I had a gift in a leopard bag with green paper. I gave him a Pittsburgh Steeler stocking cap ( his favorite NFL team) and one of my customized EAT, SLEEP, BREATHE graphic T-shirts in royal blue. He loved it and smiled hard with his special grin.
He told me I was real boss lady status, and he told me he saw me rocking out on the stage. For me to hear him address me in that manner meant a lot to me, since I know he called his wife “Boss Lady.”
It was a major compliment, and I was thankful he was genuine and lived up to my expectations just as I thought he would. I definitely look forward to crossing paths with him again in the future. Continue reading on http://h1t.it/dYvnSF
JP: With the advent of Web 2.0 and social media networking, where do you see Entertainment Journalism going?
KT: I think social media networking and Web 2.0 will continue to thrive and take the world of entertainment, and media, period to the next level. It is definitely a plus for those of us who promote or writing through the social world like Twitter or Facebook.
In this world, we live in everybody wants things quick, fast and in a hurry. Therefore, I feel as though the way technology and Internet continue to advance the world will turn more to the web and social sites to gather their news, which aids myself and others in getting their entertainment news and name spread to the world.
For example with my website www.stylistakt.com I’m able to reach people worldwide from Africa, Japan, Italy, Germany or any country you could think of. In my opinion, that speaks volumes for me and lets me know that people really do love what I’m doing and they respect me for my work and keep visiting my website.
JP: What next for Stylista KT?
KT: In 2011, I’m working on taking my name and work to the next level and branching out into different areas with my writing. I plan to have a launch party for my website, have my own fashion line for my customized T-shirt line, share more up close and personal moments with celebrities from my perspective in front of the camera, and working with other music genres. Also, I’m looking to give back to others who love entertainment as much as I do with contest giveaways and promotions on my website.
In March, I’m looking forward to attending the Southern Entertainment Awards in Memphis, TN where I am nominated for the SEA category “Journalist of the Year,” which is a great accomplishment for me because people, supporters and fans actually nominated me for this category, and they are responsible for picking the winner. I’m staying prayed up and hopeful that I bring home the award.
Overall, I’m excited about the whole experience of networking and meeting new people who are passionate about their careers in entertainment. I’m truly blessed to do what I love as I eat, sleep and breathe entertainment I hope people will join my movement on www.stylistakt.com.
Thanks again for the opportunity!
