 The Pride, Faydra D. Fields’ debut novel, is unconventional in concept, yet impeccable in its approach to an interesting conundrum: a single Black man with ten children by four different women. Sounds like it’s going to be high in low-brow drama, right? Wrong!

Taking a scenario that could quite well be a train wreck befitting a full episode of the Jerry Springer Show, Fields takes The Pride in a decidedly literary direction. Instead of making a mockery of the situation, as is popular in today’s society, the author orchestrates a blended family which slowly becomes singular in purpose and remains varied in personalities and perspectives – like a real family.

Black History Month – Joseph Black – Major League Baseball Pitcher

Professional Baseball Pitcher Joseph Black was born on February 8, 1924. He pitched in the Negro League and Major League Baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Cincinnati Redlegs, and Washington Senators and became the first black pitcher to win a World Series game, in 1952. He appears prominently in Roger Kahn’s classic book, The Boys of Summer.

Last Chance – a small town set on the edge of the far frontier. It is a place of gentle manners and common civility. After all, it should be since more than three-quarters of its residents are women. However times change when a Talent Master runs rampant, savages threaten war, and an illegal militia from an alternate universe plans invasion and empire.

A hero is needed. A Savior. Meet Aaron Turner, the small unassuming man who runs the Last Chance General Store. He is this town’s–this world’s–only hope. Unfortunately for the town, Aaron also happens to be a soldier and spy whose job is to prepare the ground for the Militia’s invasion.

To help him with this task, he has a cellar filled with advanced weaponry and the unique ability to teleport between the two worlds. However, after a year of living within Last Chance, Aaron is no longer sure in which direction his loyalties lie.
