Nichole Singleton seems to have everything a woman could want. She is a God fearing woman married to her loving husband Jeff. Her career is taking off in the right direction, and her ministry is that of the lead soprano in her church choir.

Despite the content facade that Nikki portrays, all is not well in her life. She has been keeping a secret from all of those near and dear to her. That secrets threatens to unravel the fabric of her marriage and life. Nikki has succumbed to a terrible gambling addiction due to unresolved issues that she is unable to face or communicate to her husband, friends or mother.

Til Debt Do Us Part is the story of a young woman in crisis and how the Lord brought her through a raging storm.

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the idea and inspiration to write Til Debt Do Us Part?

Michelle Larks: Keeping Misery Company was selected by an online book club as their book of the month. There were discussions as to how readers would like to see characters portrayed in Christian fiction stories.

One suggestion was they’d like to see people experiencing real life struggles, including addictions. I had already began writing Til Debt Do Us Part, so I felt like I was headed in the right direction. I’d hear people around me talk about gambling, going to the boat and playing the lottery or sports pools. I thought that might make for an interesting story line.

JP: Gambling and the Church are seemingly opposite each other in terms of moral standards. What insight will Til Debt Do Us Part provide about the affect of gambling on a Christian?

ML: I’m hoping people will walk away after reading Til Debt Due Us Part and know that God is still there for us, that he loves us and he will help us overcome any addiction. God helps us realize that none of us are perfect even Christians. We struggle with issues from time to time. That’s a part of life. Realizing God is there to guide us, if we just follow his will, is half the battle.

JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that lead to Til Debt Do Us Part getting out to the public?

ML: What I’ve been doing to promote Til Debt Do Us Part is a lot of online marketing. I’ve been participating in blog radio shows as they are available, and I pass out material when I participate in events. Most of all I’ve sent ARC copies of Til Debt Do Us Part to reviewers so they can read for me.

JP: As an author, what did you learn from writing your past novels that better prepared you to write Til Debt Do Us Part? How long did it take for you to start and finish Til Debt Do Us Part?

ML: As an author, I try to give a story my best shot in preparing it for the reading public. That means editing and then more editing. I think writing previous novels along with good feedback from readers and reviewers has helped me to write what I hope are consistently good books that have an uplifting message as well as entertain at points.

JP: What’s next for Michelle Larks?

ML: I just finished writing my 2010 release titled Faith. It will be out in May of 2010. It’s one of my best novels to date, at least that’s this author’s opinion. Also Keeping Misery Company is slated to be released on the big screen in June of 2010. I am really looking forward to both events.

5 Minutes, 5 Questions With… Keisha Ervin, author of Gunz and Roses

5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Keisha Ervin, author of Gunz and Roses
(Urban Books)

keisha ervin gunz and roses on amazondotcom

Urban fiction diva Keisha Ervin is back with Gunz and Roses, her latest story of street love. Time stands still as up and coming fashion editor Gray Rose watches the man of her dreams walk into the club. The last thing St. Louis kingpin Gunz Marciano wants is to become attached to one woman-until he spots Gray.

After one night of erotic passion, Gunz and Gray embark on a tumultuous journey. When their obsessive love becomes too much and Gunz wants out, Gray is ready to let him go. She learns the identity of his new woman, and things get complicated.

Gunz and Roses is a sensational, passionate drama filled with an intense mix of suspense, lies, and murder.

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the idea and inspiration to write Gunz and Roses?

Keisha Ervin: I actually got the story idea from some things that had happened in my own life. In the past two years, I have gone through so much relationship wise that I just felt that I needed to get it out on paper.

I also wanted to show people that I’m not perfect, that I make mistakes and that Iam still growing and learning as a woman. Hopefully, my story will help some other womn that may be going through the same thing.

JP: What sets Gunz and Roses apart from other the other cult-classic Keisha Ervin novels?

KE: This story is different because it’s based on real life events.

JP: The last time you were interviewed for “5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…”, you went from Triple Crown to Priority Books. How did you come to release Gunz and Roses through Urban Books?

KE: To set the record straight, I haven’t been signed to TCP since early 2008. After I left, I was a free agent and trying to broker a new deal. While doing that, the offer from Priority books was set on the table.  My agent and I discussed it and decided that it would be a good idea especially since Priority Books is a St. Louis based publishing company.

I knew that regardless of the publishing company, Gunz and Roses wouldn’t be out until 2009. I wanted to have a book out in-between that time, so I signed the one book deal and wrote my first novella. When I started working on Finding Forever, I signed my new publishing deal with Urban Books.

JP: What is your most memorable moment you experienced while getting this novel ready for publication?

KE: Finding the cover art. With this book, I really wanted the cover to reflect my character in the book. Urban Books presented me with a photo. It wasn’t what I was looking for, so I had to find another cover with in 24 hours.

Thankfully, my agent searched the net and found the cover that is on the book. When she sent it to me, I instantly fell in love with it. Another memorable moment was reliving all the funny and dramatic moments that has happened to me in the past two years.

JP: What’s next for Keisha Ervin?

KE: On August 25th, 2009, Gunz and Roses will be released as well as the fifth book from the Girls From The Hood series which I have a short story in called “Queen Pynn”. Currently, I’m working on my eight novel as well as a collabertive novel with my agent/author Brenda Hampton.

5 Mintues, 5 Questions With… Kendra Norman-Bellamy, author of The Lyons Den

JoeyPinkney.com Exclusive Interview
5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Kendra Norman-Bellamy, author of The Lyons Den
(Urban Books)

kendra norman-bellamy the lyons den on amazondotcom

Lieutenant Stuart Lyons has a growing son, a fulfilling career and after years of singleness and a promising relationship. He’s a veteran law enforcement officer and head of security at New Hope Church. Life is good.

Sudden pandemonium strikes when Stuart begins receiving threats from someone who only identifies himself as Dr. A.H. Satan. The stalker knows where Stuart lives, works and worships. The blocks of the near-perfect life that he has built begin falling…piece by piece.

Will Stuart’s faith help put an end to his distress, or will the infamous Legend of Shelton Heights swallow him whole?

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the idea and inspiration to write The Lyons Den?

Kendra Norman-Bellamy: All of my story inspirations are drawn from life – those things that I observe around me. Many of them are birthed from something I see or hear in church.

A couple of years ago, one of the men who serves in the security ministry at my church was assigned to provide security at my 40th birthday celebration which was held in the youth facility of the church I attend. At the time, I didn’t know him personally.

After the party ended and the cleanup had begun, he and I stood outside the facility and chatted awhile. I learned that he has not only provided security for the pastor and church, but he was also an active police officer. It made me wonder how many other men and women of God were also public servants, putting their lives in danger to secure our streets on a daily basis.

I wanted to write a book that might embody some of the heightened fears, challenges and perils that a person who serves within a security ministry at a church might face when he or she is on the clock in the capacity of a police officer. Then I wanted to show how that officer would handle these life-threatening situations when he has a personal connection to Christ.

JP: What sets The Lyons Den apart from other novels in its genre?

KNB: As I indicated previously, The Lyons Den is a romantic suspense. I don’t readily know of any other Christian fiction novels that fall into that category. That alone probably sets it apart to a degree. At least that mixes it in with a very small pile of others that might also carry that theme.

JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that lead to The Lyons Den getting out to the public?

KNB: As cliché as it may sound, it’s the truth. I accredit God for any success that I have garnered over the years. In addition to His favor, I am not a sedentary author. I’m always on the go, promoting my work and meeting my readers at conventions, conferences, book club gatherings, and other literary and church-related functions.

As with all of my novels, I started promoting The Lyons Den long before it released. When it hit bookshelves on April 1st, readers had heard about it for months prior and were ready to purchase. I’m the first to admit that all of the promotion and travel that I do is very time-consuming and tiring, but I love every minute of it. In the end, it’s all worth it.

JP: Which character in The Shelton Heights series has a personality most like your own?

KNB: None of the characters in this series bear much of a resemblance to me aside from their loyalty to God and their families. However, with each of the female leads in this series, there are small similarities to me. For instance, Jade, the leading lady in In Greene Pastures (first book in the series) is a preacher’s kid. Her dad is a pastor, and her mother is a minister as well. That’s my real life testimony as well.

Janet, the female lead in Battle of Jericho (book #2 in the series) has a cousin who is also her best friend and the person she has confided in more than any other. Although mine is nothing like Janet’s, I do have a cousin who I categorize as my closest friend and confidant.

And in The Lyons Den, Candice is like me in that she comes from a small southern town and is the first of her parents’ children to graduate from college. All of these ladies are described as being relatively short in statue, which is also a trait that is a mirror image of me.

JP: What’s next for Kendra Norman-Bellamy?

KNB: That’s a loaded question because I have so much on my plate right now. I’m currently working toward co-authoring a nonfiction book with Ralph David Abernathy III (son of the late Dr. Ralph David Abernathy, who was a civil rights legend and best friend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.).

In the meantime, my next immediate project is Cruisin’ For Christ, the star-studded annual gospel cruise that I host each summer. This year it launches September 5-12, so I’m working toward finalizing everything for that right now.

My next book will release on January 1, 2010. The title is The Morning After (Urban Christian), and it is the sequel to a previous novel, Three Fifty-Seven A.M. In addition to The Morning After, I have two other titles on the horizon: Fifteen Years (Moody Publishers/February 2010) and Song of Solomon (Urban Christian/June 2010).
