5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Bethany Mooradian, author of I Got Scammed So You Don’t Have To!
(Moreradiant Publishing)
I Got Scammed, So You Don’t Have To! covers 4 aspects of working from home:
1) How to avoid scams by learning the tricks of marketers (tracing emails and tracking IP addresses, etc)
2) Legitimate ways of making extra income
3) Legitimate companies that hire at-home workers or offer flexible hours
4) Getting into the entrepreneurial mindset
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write I Got Scammed So You Don’t Have To!?
Bethany Mooradian: I have a degree in puppetry (yes puppetry), but I learned really quickly that puppeteers don’t make that much money. So, I had to become “Queen of the Random Job” and find ways to supplement my income while feeding my puppetry habit.
Twelve years later, I’ve become known as someone who can find random jobs anywhere, anytime and any place, and most importantly I can spot a work at home scam a mile away. Now, I just teach people what I have learned so that they can do the same.
JP: What sets I Got Scammed So You Don’t Have To! apart from other books in the same genre?
BM: There are many “work at home” type books that focus on ideas and companies, but none out there really dive into the nitty-gritty technical aspects of spotting scams.
Nowadays, it’s really easy for a scammer to create a website that looks real and post ads looking for workers…only to con them later. I teach people how to research companies, trace emails, and track IP addresses so that they never have to ask, “Is it a real job or a scam?”
JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to I Got Scammed So You Don’t Have To! getting out to the public?
BM: I have a teacher’s heart. I really enjoy educating others on various aspects of working from home. Since 2003, I have been instructing classes through various school districts and colleges. This has not only gotten my name into the community as a reputable and reliable resource but also gives me the face-to-face contact that I like to have with my readers. I believe my success in book sales is related to the classes I teach.
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish I Got Scammed So You Don’t Have To!?
BM: My books are never finished! The work at home industry is always changing. There are always new companies, scams, and resources. I update my books every few years based on what is current at the time.
My first book, which evolved into the current, “The Mystery Shopper Training Program” took me about 4 months to write, since I focused it around my class content. My second book, “I Got Scammed So You Don’t Have To!” took me about nine months to write.
Updates usually take about a month or two, where I sequester myself from the world and just focus on getting it done.
JP: What’s next for Bethany Mooradian?
BM: I’ll be starting online classes in the next couple of months! These will have the same content as my in-person classes in the Seattle area, but people from across the country will be able to participate.
