A lot can change in two years….or can it?

It’s taken two years, but Rick Jenkins is finally ready to live again. His professional life continues to blossom, but his personal life is more fractured than a jigsaw puzzle. At the urging of his boys, he decides to try the dating thing again, but isn’t sure he can trust again…

The more things change, the more they stay the same. In Corey J. Barnes’ sequel to the sizzling debut novel What Is This Love Thing All About, he examines if time really does cure all. Can you ever really stop loving someone once you have done so? Can you move on from hurt and love again? All of these questions and more will be answered in the next installment from Author Corey J. Barnes, Single For The Night.

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write Single For The Night?

Corey J. Barnes: The inspiration to write this book was to finish the story that I started last year with my first book, What Is This Love Thing All About? It is a sequel. I wanted to give the readers more of what I did in the first story, the culmination of what happens when a good man tries to do right by a woman.

JP: What sets Single For The Night apart from other books in the same genre?

C.J.B.: What sets my book apart is that I write stories that emphasizes old school chivalry in relationships. I write all about positive and upstanding characters who have real life issues and how they handle them.

Good men are still out there, and that is what I strive to portray in my books away from the typical stereotypes.

JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to Single For The Night getting out to the public?

C.J.B.: Networking is key. Word-of-mouth is the biggest form of advertising available. Making as many positive connections as possible is whats most important. It has been said that writing is easy, but publishing is where the real work is.

Being a self published author, I would have to agree. Facebook, Myspace, Yahoo author groups, reaching out to book clubs, etc., all are keys to being successful.

JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish Single For The Night?

C.J.B.: This book was actually harder to write than the first one. Being that it was a sequel, I had to continue to write this story, careful not to use the same plots, stories, etc. and such so as to keep things fresh.

Trying to live up to the expectations from the first book was tough and meeting deadlines was also a new challenge from the first one. It actually took me about 5 months to get this book done once I started to write the sequel to this book.

JP: What’s next for Corey J. Barnes?

C.J.B.: I have two projects in place this year. I will be putting out my third book this year, tentatively entitled Softest Place On Earth. I also will be ghost writing a book for a professional football player as well, due out this summer as well.

  1. Always a great interview. I enjoyed both books by Corey. I love the positive images of the African American male. Rick Jenkins is proof positive that good men do exist. Loving the title of the next book and hope it doesnt change. Keep up the great work Joey and Corey! BTW I HIGHLY recommend both “What is this love thing all about” and “Single for a night”

Yes, Mr. Barnes has an incredible couple of books that he has put out there that take us in a different direction of what most African American books are offering these days.

It shows that there is more to Black Literature that sex and violence. Those are realities, but there is love, life and reality
