5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
LaShanda Michelle, author of Sweeter Than The Honey
(L. M. Ink)
Kamilah Wright has a lot on her shoulders for someone entering their senior year of high school. Not only does her mom expect her to raise the other seven children in their home, but she’s also required to turn a blind eye to her father’s infidelity, as well as maintain a perfect 4.0 GPA in order to get the academic scholarship she desperately needs to attend college.
To complicate matters even more, she’s also a rape victim. The only person she’s told is her best friend, Eric, whom she’s secretly in love with. Through all of this, Kamilah convinces herself that she has everything under control.
That is until she meets Summer Freeman. The beautiful new girl at school, Summer introduces Kamilah to a lifestyle that she’s never known, including fashion, luxury, and alternative viewpoints that conflict with her Christian upbringing.
Pretty soon the love she has for her new friend evolves into something more, and Kamilah has to prove which love she will devote herself to. Will she stay in the same sex relationship that feels so right, or will she embrace the faith she didn’t know meant so much to her?
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the idea and inspiration to write Sweeter Than The Honey?
LaShanda Michelle: Sweeter Than The Honey is actually a dream that I had. When I woke up, I could remember it vividly in detail. I finally began to write it down. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. It eventually became Sweeter Than The Honey.
JP: What sets Sweeter Than The Honey apart from other books in its genre?
LM: I believe my book stands out because it’s edgy. It goes where other books in the genre will not. It’s gritty. It’s honest. It’s presented in a way that tells the ugly side of reality, but still points the reader to Christ. A lot of Christian fiction books paint a picture that is so holy they are unrealistic. Sweeter Than The Honey doesn’t do that.
JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that lead to Sweeter Than The Honey getting out to the public?
LM: I think strong determination and marketing is the key. You can’t be afraid to put yourself out there, and you can’t have a fear of rejection. Know that you produced something worthy of what you wish for it to achieve. Have faith that it will happen.
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take for you to start and finish Sweeter Than The Honey?
LM: My writing process is pretty unstructured. I write whenever the words come to me. There are times that I write in the middle of the night. There are other times when I write first thing in the morning.
Once I wrote for three days straight, stopping only to eat, sleep, use the restroom and complete hygienic routines. All together it took me about six months to finish Sweeter Than The Honey.
JP: What’s next for LaShanda Michelle?
LM: I am currently working an a new book that will be released next summer.
