5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
N.S. Ugezene, author of The Life and Thoughts of Shaun Pascal
(Lulu/CreateSpace/Ugez Novels)
My novel is about a man who has been trying to find himself but isn’t exactly sure how to. He questions love because it hasn’t fulfilled him until he meets a woman who tries to show him another way and to motivate him.
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write The Life and Thoughts of Shaun Pascal?
N.S. Ugezene: My inspiration was really to do something different with urban fiction and to depict some of my roots. I also wrote this book thinking about the work of hip-hop artists such as Eminem, Kanye West, Redman, Lou Diamonds, etc.
JP: What sets The Life and Thoughts of Shaun Pascal apart from other books in the same genre?
NSU: I went away from the overage of sex, drugs and violence. I didn’t want to lean on those aspects to put out an urban title. I incorporated other types of counterculture to add some diverse deviance. I also have glimpses of contemporary thought. This is a versatile work that refuses to stay in one lane.
JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to The Life and Thoughts of Shaun Pascal getting out to the public?
NSU: I do not like to confine myself. Boxing myself in leads to struggle figuring out the content on the book. People have to remember that this is creative writing, so you can broaden what it going on content-wise whereas with a non-fiction work, you must narrow the content down.
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish The Life and Thoughts of Shaun Pascal?
NSU: I start with a general outline and then construct the rough draft. I may end up making changes within my outline. I make changes to the content as I go. Once the rough draft is done, I order a proof and make more changes to get to a final product.
JP: What’s next for N.S. Ugezene?
NSU: My next work, I am expecting to have out Summer 2011. I will be posting excerpts of the upcoming title on Facebook from time to time. I just want to be able to continue to do what I am passionate about and am glad that God pointed me in this direction.

I like where this young brother is coming from and respect his decision to come with something different. Bravo.
Question: what is the meaning behind the book cover?
That is a great question. Firstly, I would like to start with the fact that there is money on the cover which represents success; however, the money is hard to see. That coincides with the central character being n far from success. The second thing I want to point out is the person is front. This person who I will leave anonymous symbolizes an addiction or “human poison” if you will. There is someone behind this person representing the poison. This is the person who is to help to break all signs of addiction in the central character.
