JoeyPinkney.com Exclusive Interview
5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Ni’cola, author of Appetizer
(NCM Publishing)
Three girlfriends with three totally different lives, or so they think. They all have one thing in common: they are really their man’s chick on the side. What happens when a woman finds out that she is not her man’s main course, she is only the appetizer…..
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the idea and inspiration to write Appetizer?
Ni’cola: I got the idea and inspiration to write Appetizer from various situations. I wanted to tell a behind-the-scenes story of the mistress and how one falls into this role.
On many occasions, the mistress gets a bad rap. Usually the mistress doesn’t even have a clue that she is a mistress until it is too late. By this point she has feelings, emotions and nowadays children involved.
I know women, including myself, that have been put into this situation. For the women that enjoy being the other woman and goes after men in relationships, I wanted to explain the method to their madness.
JP: Both men and women can find themselves in precarious relationships. What does Appetizer offer to that person who might be seeking a little education with their entertainment?
Ni’cola: Appetizer teaches many lessons, but there are two that sticks out the most in my head: 1) There are many and severe consequences to simple pleasures and 2)Short term action can leave a lasting affect on everyone in your life, such as spouse, kids, friends, etc.
JP: What have you learned from publishing Over and Over Again that makes Appetizer a better book?
Ni’cola: There were a lot of lessons learned from publishing Over and Over Again. The most important lesson was not to limit myself. With everything done, there is trial and error.
Anything that worked for me the first time, I continue to utilize. Anything that could have been better, I have tweaked it to make Appetizer a better product.
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take for you to start and finish The Appetizer?
Ni’cola: I try to start off every project in an outline form. I take the topic and use it as the foundation. Then I try to put in as many subtopics as possible. I do not write from beginning to end. I write whatever is in my heart. Appetizer took me only six months from start to finish.
JP: What’s next for Ni’cola?
Ni’cola: 2010 will be very busy for me. My next novel is Twisted. This is the direct sequel to Over and Over Again and is not due out until the fall. Candy, my villianess in Over and Over Again, has gained her own story, entitled Candy. It will be out in the end of the year. Also, I will be included into several anthologies.
I try to ensure that all my stories are connecting. No matter what book is picked to read first, the reader will want to pick up one of the other books to find out more about my crazy characters.
Ni’cola is also a motivational speaker and consultant. She is such an outstanding representative of Las Vegas’ African-American community, she was selected to be featured in the second edition of Who’s Who in Black Las Vegas.
Her novel Over and Over Again was also featured in the top ten by EDC Creations Recommended Reading List for the 2009 fall season under Mainstream Fiction and Women’s Fiction. She is also a member of the national touring group the Literary Sistah’s.
When Ni’cola isn’t writing, she loves to spend time with her family and volunteer as a mentor for youth activities.

It is interesting to see someone tackle this subject. The truth is I can not imagine there being any winners in this situation but it is good that Ni’cola is there to try and put some light on the subject.
How is she writing two books at the same time though; both due out at the end of 2010?
Rodney,
It really wasn’t really hard because I wrote about real life situations. And no it is not hard to write two books at one time. Lol rhat would be too much drama going on in one book. Lol
Ni’cola,
that is a different take on a touchy issue. Most people think the so-called other woman is the home wrecker and they dont often take into consideration that fact that she may have been an unknowing participant. Great title and cover too! I look forward to reading your story.

“The Unique Reviewer”
Unika thank you for your support and I can’t wait for you too read it either…lol On a more serious note though, I wanted people too see that there are two sides to every story. This subject is touchy for me because I have been on both side of the fence. I have been cheated on and I have been the one that he was cheating with. Either role is not a good one.

Ni’Cola, I agree with the post above. While I’ve never been in the situation myself, I’ve always known that the other woman may not have become so by choice. While some women seek out attached men, its nice to hear the stories of those who don’t. I look forward to reading your book.
T Harper,
The sad part about it is that there are more women that do not know than you think. Thanks for the support.

I also agree to certain degree with the woman who commented on this. I myself was in a situation with someone whom cheated on me with a woman that knew he had somebody. I blame both parties but I feel as though a woman should have some kind of self respect to not deal with someone who has someone despite how he may try to make his relationship seem. But you do have some females who really don’t know and its messed up for anyone male or female to put another person in a blind situation like that.
Alysia,
I feel you completely! There was a situation that I was in and the woman knew about me. I have no respect for her because she has children especially daughters. What kind of role model is that? The more I found out about her the anger changed from anger to saddness because the self esteem issues that she had was what fuels her fire.
Great interview! I’ve never been a mistress. However, I know people who have experienced their spouses/significant others being in relationships with others. Some of the mistresses knew about the wife, while some didn’t. So it would be a feat to know what goes on in the minds of the other woman.
Jennifer,
My point exactly. All mistresses do not know the real situation until it is too late. It is not just the feelings of the women but now there is interaction with family friends and even children. I wanted to shine light on the feelings of everyone involved.

I like the thought process behind her technique and the fact that she chose to put out there the method to the madness of the “other” woman. Great interview as usual Joey.
Thanks Latin Temptress…. Everything happens for a reason and everyone does things for a purpose….. I just wanted to tell a story that displayed all of that.

I agree with “LatinTemptress” about Ni’cola’s clever writing method and tips.
I’ve been writing a book for about six years, I’m impressed that it only took her six months to write this book.
Engaging and informative interview.
Lukeither,
Thank you for the kind words….. my advice too you is just finish what you started. I give my self a goal of writing 5000 words a day… I have never reached my target lol, but I do the minimum 2000. It takes determination.
