Hannah D. Spivey, author of Ebony the Beloved

My book is about a 15-year-old girl named, Ebony Starks. She lives in a dysfunctional household with two parents who worship opposing deities, and she later discovers they never loved her.

Ebony has a hard time finding love until she meets an older woman named, Norma Lue, who takes Ebony under her wings and shows her the love she’s never received from her “parents.” Things begin to get better for Ebony until she cross paths with a world renown entertainer named, Desmond Waltz who has a hidden, dark sadistic side that later rears its ugly head.

To add more salt to the festering wound, Ebony meets Desmond’s controlling and manipulative mother, who is destined to turn her world upside down as much as Desmond’s. Ebony has been through blaze and back until she finally says “Enough is a damn enough.”

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write Ebony the Beloved?

Hannah D. Spivey: I wanted to write a book that hasn’t been written yet. I found my inspiration through the characters I’ve read in previous books, and it gave me the epiphany to create characters you hear about but don’t hear about very often.

I like to push the grain and challenge the reader. I’m a cerebral writer and thinker. Therefore, I believe in using the critical thinking method in my books. So, when people read my books, they’re like “What? I didn’t know things like this existed.”

JP: What sets Ebony the Beloved apart from other books in the same genre?

HDS: My book is laced with eccentricity, shock, and humor. I have a very vivid imagination. Therefore, I like to engage the readers. I guess I’m like the Grace Jones of Urban literature.

JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to Ebony the Beloved getting out to the public?

HDS: I don’t go outside of the box. I pretend it never existed. I believe in creativity and innovation. I believe both of these terms are conducive to having a successful writing career. You have to know who you’re targeting, and you have to believe in your product.

JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish Ebony the Beloved?

HDS: I really don’t know, because I’m like traffic when it comes to writing my books; I stop and go. I write when I feel like it. And it can be a set back, because procrastination can be your biggest foe. So, I must push myself to write if I plan on meeting the deadline I’ve set for myself.

It has taken me five months to write my first book, and I had to push myself while writing it. I wanted to get it out to hundreds of thousands of readers.

JP: What’s next for Hannah D. Spivey?

HDS: I’m currently writing my second book entitled The Bold and The Ugly Truth. It’s collecting dust, but I will resume writing it once I have more time to do it. Although, I am anxious to write it, I’m mainly focused on promoting my current novel.

My second novel is going to be VERY controversial, and it is going to tackle many issues. I’m talking about race, sexuality, politics, you name it. And this is where challenging the readers stems from.

Right now, I’m lining up my first national book tour, and I will be showcasing and promoting my book like NEVER EVER before. I’m also working on a non-profit campaign called, “Beauniquely Me.” It is to made to empower women of all ages and colors.
