James Mercer Langston Hughes was born on February 1, 1902. Best known as an American poet, Hughes was also asocial activist, a novelist, a playwright, and a columnist. One of the earliest innovators of the then-new literary art form “jazz poetry”, Hughes is best known for his work during the Harlem Renaissance.
