Nykee Parker, author of The Reflection In The Mirror
(NBP Publishing)

The Reflection in the Mirror is an inspirational book designed for women of all ages who suffer from low self-esteem and low self-image. Often times, this problem starts from a young age, usually pre-teen years, when acceptance is sought from our parents, our peers, and society in general. When identity cannot be found in the right place, a person will go through life seeking validation in all of the wrong places and that leads to constant disappointment.

Using the serenity prayer as a model, I offer a solution to this problem by helping the reader build confidence by understanding what their purpose is in life and discovering their true identity. My goal is for every woman to be able to walk with her held high regardless of what she looks like or what her “design” is.

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write The Reflection In The Mirror?

Nykee Parker: As a child, I was constantly teased by classmates over various physical features and so I thought I was ugly. I felt like I had no purpose and, as a result, I often battled depression and suicidal thoughts.

As a young adult, I discovered Psalms 139:14, and I truly began to understand that I was beautiful because God created me. Through reading more scripture and much prayer, I understood who I was and now I want to share that experience with others suffering the same thing.

JP: What sets The Reflection In The Mirror apart from other books in the same genre?

NP: I use my own experiences and the Serenity prayer as a step-by-step guide to making it through the journey of loving yourself and accepting your design.

JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to The Reflection In The Mirror getting out to the public?

NP: Word-of-mouth and I post to Twitter and Facebook regularly. I also seek out organizations who focus their attention on battered women, teen moms, and any other group that I feel may benefit from the knowledge in this book.

JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish The Reflection In The Mirror?

NP: I usually write an outline to serve as a blueprint for the completed project. If I need to make changes along the way, I make them, but do my best to stay within the points of the outline. For this particular book, it took about two months.

JP: What’s next for Nykee Parker?

NP: I have two works in progress: My second Poetry book, Words and Poems From The Heart: Volume II – Evolution, set to be released by 3/31/12, and the first book of my Romanticies and Fantasies Series, Trial By Fire, set to be released by 6/30/12. I have also written an outline for a book that falls in the Christian Action and Adventure/Fantasy genre.
