JoeyPinkney.com Exclusive Interview
5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Dean Jéan-Pierre, author of Moist
(CalmWaters Entertainment Group)
Moist is a collection of sensually written erotica stories that take readers into stories about who they are as sexual beings. From “Black Skin” is a story addressing the association of sexual energy to the hue of your skin, “Thick, Sweet And Just as Fine” is a story about being overweight and still sexually beautiful and “Threesome with God” is a story about the place that God holds in love and sex, the intent with a collection like this is to try to create a place where the mental and physical aspects of sex can come together, literally.
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write Moist?
Dean Jéan-Pierre: My mind is always Moist with thought. I’m always looking for ideas for stories from everything around me. It could be snippets of conversation, maybe something I heard in a song, something I read that I can add my own twist to it and of course, my personal life.
The trick is to incorporate your life, your imagination into your writing, in a way that doesn’t seem that it is about you, but can still hold the interest of your readers. When you have all of these elements, you can try to put your own personal stamp on it, with your voice.
JP: What sets Moist apart from other books in the same genre?
DJP: When people hear the word “erotica” it’s usually associated with purely sex or sometimes porn. I like to think of my writing as being lyrical prose, the kind of prose that as you read each word, you become inebriated by what you read.
When I write erotica, I like to delve beneath the surface and connect sex to who you are as a person. I want there to be something in my story that a reader can identify with and it doesn’t have to be sex.
JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to Moist getting out to the public?
DJP: WOM (word of mouth) is always the best way. Trying to connect with readers through various social medias and not trying to make every connection about selling your book. You don’t have to beg or harass folks to buy your book–they’ll get it if they really want it.
As an indie writer also, it’s a necessity to try to do book shows, book clubs, just so you can remain in the conversation and meet people. Every experience doesn’t have to lead to book sales. You build a network, one reader at a time.
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish Moist?
DJP: I usually come up with the title first and build the framework of the characters and location from there. I tend to write everyday and work on 3-5 projects at the same time. When one project isn’t flowing, I move to the next and that works for me.
I need complete silence when I write. No television. No music. No cell phones. You have inhabit your writing. You have to swim in your own thoughts to find the life in your story.
JP: What’s next for Dean Jéan-Pierre?
DJP: I have a few things on the table.
Woman Worship 2
Life After Love (novel)
Insatiable 2
The Killing Club of Ex-Girlfriends
Cum for Me (erotica collection)
Assume the Position (erotica collection)
