Joey Pinkney’s Short, Short Story “Maxine” won the MyQOTD.com’s Short Story Kindle Competition!

My short story “Maxine” won the MyQOTD.com Short Story Kindle Competition by ONE vote! Hey, I’ll take it anyway I can get it…

“Maxine” is a quick scene about an heart-felt discussion between a husband and his wife about their daughter.

To be truthful, it was a great feeling to enter my story and to see that story in turn get such a great response. I mean, I got all kinds of encouragement. But more interesting was the questions. Is this going to be a book? Did the father mess with his stepdaughter? What’s next for Maxine?

So, even if I didn’t win. I won. Because my story had an effect on people. And that was the people who came forth to express their feeling. Maybe, just maybe, there were others that were also strongly affected by that short passage.

As I asked for votes, people started commenting in public forums like twitter and Facebook. I asked if I could quote them. All gave me permission. So I made this video to highlight the short story and get more votes.

Somewhere along the lines, the voting got messed up. MyQOTD.com went from popular votes to judges. I was still getting comments of confidence, so I created the video listed at the top of this post.

MyQOTD.com is going to compile some of the entries into a Kindle ebook to showcase the various talent that came from that competition. Be on the lookout for that. I’m pretty excited to see how that comes out. In the meantime, you can read the “Maxine” here: http://h1t.it/maxineshort2

Also, be on the lookout for my Kindle competition. It’s coming up soon.

  1. No one better than you. You deserve it. I thought you reviewed book, not write it… 🙂 It’s very well written and I think what captured people in the end is intensity. Keep praticing at that. It’s much harder to write that good in novel size/format. You should do NaNoWriMo this year. Just for the expereince.

  2. Thank you, Ivin. I really appreciate that. I am a slow writer – the opposite of you…

I really want to buckle down and do NaNoWriMo this year, but I’ve been saying that for the past two years.

I am going to make it a mission to get it together and put it out there.

  3. Wanted to read the story, but the link is 404’d…as in broken. Congrats anyway, Joey. Maybe in will get ton read it someplace else-like ………in a novel maybe? LOL.
