JoeyPinkney.com Exclusive Interview
5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Ni’cola, author of Appetizer
(NCM Publishing)
Three girlfriends with three totally different lives, or so they think. They all have one thing in common: they are really their man’s chick on the side. What happens when a woman finds out that she is not her man’s main course, she is only the appetizer…..
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the idea and inspiration to write Appetizer?
Ni’cola: I got the idea and inspiration to write Appetizer from various situations. I wanted to tell a behind-the-scenes story of the mistress and how one falls into this role.
On many occasions, the mistress gets a bad rap. Usually the mistress doesn’t even have a clue that she is a mistress until it is too late. By this point she has feelings, emotions and nowadays children involved.
I know women, including myself, that have been put into this situation. For the women that enjoy being the other woman and goes after men in relationships, I wanted to explain the method to their madness.
JP: Both men and women can find themselves in precarious relationships. What does Appetizer offer to that person who might be seeking a little education with their entertainment?
Ni’cola: Appetizer teaches many lessons, but there are two that sticks out the most in my head: 1) There are many and severe consequences to simple pleasures and 2)Short term action can leave a lasting affect on everyone in your life, such as spouse, kids, friends, etc.
JP: What have you learned from publishing Over and Over Again that makes Appetizer a better book?
Ni’cola: There were a lot of lessons learned from publishing Over and Over Again. The most important lesson was not to limit myself. With everything done, there is trial and error.
Anything that worked for me the first time, I continue to utilize. Anything that could have been better, I have tweaked it to make Appetizer a better product.
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take for you to start and finish The Appetizer?
Ni’cola: I try to start off every project in an outline form. I take the topic and use it as the foundation. Then I try to put in as many subtopics as possible. I do not write from beginning to end. I write whatever is in my heart. Appetizer took me only six months from start to finish.
JP: What’s next for Ni’cola?
Ni’cola: 2010 will be very busy for me. My next novel is Twisted. This is the direct sequel to Over and Over Again and is not due out until the fall. Candy, my villianess in Over and Over Again, has gained her own story, entitled Candy. It will be out in the end of the year. Also, I will be included into several anthologies.
I try to ensure that all my stories are connecting. No matter what book is picked to read first, the reader will want to pick up one of the other books to find out more about my crazy characters.
Ni’cola is also a motivational speaker and consultant. She is such an outstanding representative of Las Vegas’ African-American community, she was selected to be featured in the second edition of Who’s Who in Black Las Vegas.
