JoeyPinkney.com Exclusive Interview
5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Bernice L. McFadden, author of “Camilla’s Roses”
(Naki)
Like many of my books, this book is about family. However, it is also about identity.
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write “Camilla’s Roses”?
Bernice L. McFadden: “Camilla’s Roses” was inspired by my family experiences. The good, the bad and the strange. I pulled scenes from my childhood and merged them with what the characters brought to the story.
JP: What sets “Camilla’s Roses” apart from other books in the same genre?
BLM: That’s a difficult question to answer. I don’t think I can answer it. I think that question would need to be answered by the readers.
JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to “Camilla’s Roses” getting out to the public?
BLM: “Camilla’s Roses” was my fifth publication. The book that introduced me to the reading public was “Sugar”. I believe I’m successful because I trust my gut and believe in my characters and refuse to allow publishing to define who I am and what I write.
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish “Camilla’s Roses”?
BLM: I think about a story for a years before I actually commit to to paper. After that, the physical writing takes me about a year to complete.
JP: What’s next for Bernice L. McFadden?
BLM: I hope to spend some time at a few artist colonies, so that I can really immerse myself into this new book that I’m working on.
