JoeyPinkney.com Exclusive Interview
5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Kristofer Clarke, author of ‘Til It Happens To You
(Second Twin Publishing)
The grass isn’t greener on the other side, the third time isn’t always a charm, and trust is a hard thing to come by these days. These are the lessons learned by Davaan Bradley, Trevor Harrison, and Jackson Bradley when they decide to give love one last try.
They are suddenly led down this familiar road of infidelity, lies, and betrayal, and secrets thought to be unknown to anyone else, threatens to break their worlds apart. Will they control their own destinies? Will they allow someone else’s version of the truth take its course and crumble their worlds?
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write ‘Til It Happens To You?
Kristofer Clarke: After my first novel, Less Than Perfect Circumstance, readers were very interested in what was next for the characters. So, honestly, I was inspired by my readers. I wanted to deliver for them, and from what I heard, they are pleased with the product.
JP: What sets ‘Til It Happens To You apart from other books in the same genre?
KC: I wrote a novel to which people can relate. My stories are not very far from someone’s truth. I hope the stories i write allow people to see they are not alone; they are not the only one going through their situation. I hope it allows them to see even though love hurts, its still ok to love. Love makes you human, not weak.
JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to ‘Til It Happens To You getting out to the public?
KC: You must have an agenda to keep you exposed to the masses. You have to stay on the grind. There should never be a day where you don’t feel like promoting your novel, your craft, your hard work.
You have to believe your novel is a must read in order to pitch it to potential readers as such. I also have some great author friends who bring events i may not know about to my attention. I definitely appreciate them for that. You have to network and support each others craft.
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish ‘Til It Happens To You?
KC: I usually sit in front of the computer with the television and music (usually coming from the computer) and i just start to write. I’ve never written from an outline because I never really know where the characters are going to take me. I just listen to them and let it flow. Sometimes we have disagreements, but in the end they always win.
It took exactly seven month to finish the first draft of ‘Til It Happens to you. Then of course another two month for editing, rewrite, and proof read.
JP: What’s next for Kristofer Clarke?
KC: I’m currently writing my third novel, tentatively titled Second Thoughts, which is due out in summer or spring 2012. Some stories that readers were hoping to see in ‘Til It Happens To You will be revealed in Second Thoughts.
Based on feedback, I’m definitely bringing more drama, but will stay true to each character. Will maintain the element of surprise, and promise to keep the readers guessing until the very end.
