JoeyPinkney.com Exclusive Interview
5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Maxine Brothers, author of Shook
(SolaPress)
Shook is a story about a female assassin who is connected to the drug life through family ties that has just decided that she is tired of living the life.
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write Shook?
Maxine Brothers: There was no specific place. I always try to do something that I havent done before when I write. As of lately, everything that I have written about was love or love lost.
JP: What sets Shook apart from other books in the same genre?
MB: I believe it’s the betrayal of it all. I have never heard of anyone doing what she did and surviving to talk about it.
JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to Shook getting out to the public?
MB: 1. Not listening to what everyone else has to say about what I am doing. 2. Allowing myself to take my time and write instead of rushing the story 3. Having a great editor-in-chief that also believes in my work and allows me to do me.
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish Shook?
MB: I am a scatter-brained author. I don’t have a specific process. I write when I feel like it. When I don’t, I don’t. For me, you can tell the difference in my work if it’s forced or written from my spirit.
JP: What’s next for Maxine Brothers?
MB: I have six novels that need to be finished, another poetry book and a play. There is plenty of busy work for me.
