JoeyPinkney.com Exclusive Interview
5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Nathan Welch, author of A Killer’z Ambition
(DC Bookdiva Publications)
My novel is about one man’s quest for revenge and redemption for himself and the people he left behind in prison.
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write A Killer’z Ambition?
Nathan Welch: From several men who are currently incarcerated, who ran the idea across me after reading several of my unpublished manuscripts. They challenged me to write something from their perspective.
JP: What sets A Killer’z Ambition apart from other books in the same genre?
NW: I didn’t go with the usual and regular ingredients that I see used in crafting stories for the Urban Lit Genre.
I looked at it in a fantasy aspect of what would a guy really do after getting released from prison and had the chance to confront the guy responsible for putting him there in the first place. I tried to look at what would he do when he had the chance to confront others who were responsible for his friends being in prison as well.
I have always imagined this book having a soundtrack. With the help of DC Bookdiva and Fast Lane Entertainment, a mixtape was produced to accompany the book. The soundtrack fits the book to a T! All three songs are perfectly fit to tell the story of the characters within A Killer’z Ambition.
A very special shout out to Tiah Short and Author Eyone Williams for an awesome job on this.
JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to A Killer’z Ambition getting out to the public?
NW: Determination and never giving up on my dream to become a published writer. I have been writing for years, and it has actually taken me eight years to be published.
I received more rejection letters than I can count. This inspired me to continue to chase my dreams and submit my work to other publishing houses.
Once my manuscript landed on Tiah Short’s desk, CEO of DC Bookdiva Publications, she saw a unique story in my rough draft, applied the necessary pressure for me to rewrite, and my first novel is now published.
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish A Killer’z Ambition?
NW: Usually, I set a goal to write at least 5-to-10 pages a day. The minimum is 5 pages. The next day or later on that night, I re-write those pages until I’m satisfied. I then edit them and try to produce 5-to-10 more pages until the book is completed.
It really pushes me when I have somebody on my back waiting to read the next scenes. I think it took me about 45-to-50 days to complete the first draft of A Killer’z Ambition.
JP: What’s next for Nathan Welch?
NW: GOD willing, I will give the readers Part 2 of A Killer’z Ambition: New World Order and to have a huge impact on the Urban Street Lit Genre.

Never giving up on your dream. THAT’S quote I try to live by. It’s nice for a book to come forth with a true, real perspective.

Since most of this book takes place on the street that I grew up on and still live on. I can say that the writing was true to life. I lived through much of the drama. I am a detective now and can say that with most of these books the writing is contrived and fake at best. Not this one. Hold on to your weaves this book reads like a car going down a winding mountain with no breaks. You just have to hold on and hope for the best.
