5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Nicole I. Burgess, author of Ingrid Darling
(Self-published)
Confusion and lack of direction seem to be the driving force in Ingrid’s world, yet they are far from what she wants out of life. Realizing that her addictions are leading her further astray, Ingrid decides to move to a big city where she meets new people who lead her in positive directions and challenge her to become a better person.
However, as someone from the past tries to ruin her happiness, Ingrid seeks solace in a confidant only to be betrayed by them as well. Unless Ingrid can find solace elsewhere, her life will continue to travel the same paths, and she will lose herself before finding true happiness.
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write Ingrid Darling?
Nicole I. Burgess: I’ve always enjoyed reading books that challenge me to think about myself and the world around me. The inspiration for this book came after I began reading famous literary works written in the 19th and 20th century following societal, social, and philosophical changes that were happening all around the world.
Reading different literary works by some of the greatest thinkers of our time, coupled with my own personal, social, and relationship struggles, in essence, became the inspiration for me to write my own novel.
JP: What sets Ingrid Darling apart from other books in the same genre?
NIB: To be honest, I’m not exactly sure what genre my books falls into. It follows the realistically dramatic story of a female protagonist, yet it is riddled with underlying messages which make the story inspiring as well as entertaining.
If I could group several different genres together, this book would be a conglomeration of literary fiction/drama/philosophical fiction/self-help/inspirational and motivational. This in itself sets my book apart from any other.
JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to Ingrid Darling getting out to the public?
NIB: Writing a novel that readers can enjoy is the first key to success. A good book can become a great success just by word-of-mouth. As well, we live in a time where we can access many different mediums of communication, especially through social media outlets, and using these can contribute greatly to an authors success.
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish Ingrid Darling?
NIB: I don’t have a particular writing process. If an idea comes to me, I’ll write it down in a journal and decide later which novel or short story it will go into. At the same time, I prefer to be accurate in anything that I create, so I do a tremendous amount of research before I can sit down and write anything. This book is based on five years of research, though it only took about five months to sit down and write.
JP: What’s next for Nicole I. Burgess?
NIB: In addition to this book, I have also written a short story, so I will continue to write more short stories as well as other books. I am currently working on another book which I hope to have finished in the next year.
