5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Beth Jones, author of Write That Book: How to Finally Conquer the Novel You’ve Always Dreamed About
So you’ve decided to write a book. Congratulations! You’ve taken the first step in becoming a published author. While you might think this is something minute or unimportant, the truth is that it’s not. Many people spend their entire lives thinking “I should write a book someday” or “I really want to write a book,” yet they never actually take those first steps and start writing. Simply by making the decision to write a book, you’ve taken your first steps on the road to success.
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write “Write That Book: How to Finally Conquer the Novel You’ve Always Dreamed About”?
Beth Jones: I have met so many readers who tell me, “I’d love to write a book, but I just don’t know where to start!” “Write That Book” is designed to help anyone write their own book, whether or not they have any writing experience.
JP: What sets “Write That Book: How to Finally Conquer the Novel You’ve Always Dreamed About” apart from other books in the same genre?
BJ: Many writing books, even novel-writing books, are designed for people with professional writing experience. “Write That Book” is perfect for anyone who has never written anything in their life. All you need to succeed is a good idea.
JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to “Write That Book: How to Finally Conquer the Novel You’ve Always Dreamed About” getting out to the public?
BJ: A lot of writers will tell you have you have to have a mailing list, a huge website, or a large fan base in order to succeed as a writer. For me, the key has been to set regular goals and to consistently try to meet and exceed those goals.
For example, instead of saying, “I wish I would sell a book,” I say, “I want to sell 10 books this week.” That gives me something to focus on. I set very specific goals and then come up with ways I can meet those goals.
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish “Write That Book: How to Finally Conquer the Novel You’ve Always Dreamed About”?
BJ: I write every day, but I do my best work at night. I spend anywhere from 2-6 hours writing each night. I like to outline my book, write it, and then create an amazing cover. I also do a lot of promotion even before the book is finished to get readers excited about the book and to let them know what’s coming next.
Most of the time, a book takes me a few weeks to write if I’m working on it consistently. I wrote a novel once that took me almost 2 years to write, but for the most part I spend less than a month working on a book.
JP: What’s next for Beth Jones?
BJ: My next book, “Simple: 30 Ways to Declutter Your Life” will walk readers through the process of downsizing both their homes and their lives. This 100-page guide offers specific ideas and precise steps that readers can take to begin to decrease stress and improve their lives.
