Rose Mary Stiffin, PhD, author of Walk in Bethel

Walk in Bethel is a historical family saga spanning five generations. This award-winning debut novel describes the gripping events and solemn secrets that bind three families to each other in the Deep South, 30 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write Walk in Bethel?

Rose Mary Stiffin, PhD: I am from Indianola, Mississippi, hometown of Blues legend B.B. King. Walk in Bethel is set in the Mississippi Delta in a real plantation town.

JP: What sets Walk in Bethel apart from other books in the same genre?

RMS: The honesty and the language of Walk in Bethel sets is apart from other historical fiction novels set in the Jim Crow South. This book really pulls at the reader’s emotions, and the characters will affect the readers’ sensibilities when it comes to human nature.

JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to Walk in Bethel getting out to the public?

RMS: For Walk in Bethel, I entered numerous contests, and I tried to do as many book events as possible.

JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish Walk in Bethel?

RMS: I don’t have a particular writing process. I can’t remember how long it took to complete Walk in Bethel from start to finish. Including that debut novel, I’ve written five novels. Walk in Bethel might have taken me the longest to write, but it actually came to me in one fell swoop – literally from beginning to end.

JP: What’s next for Rose Mary Stiffin, PhD?

RMS: I am struggling with this sixth novel. For some reason, the several ideas I am working with will not cement into one novel.
