5 Minutes, 5 Questions With…
Robert Leon Davis, author of Running Scared: For 22 Years He Was a Fugutive – The Corrupt Cop Busted by God
(Monarch Books)
Robert Leon Davis was a street kid from a tough community. Raised on the brink of poverty, he and his siblings often went hungry. With the help of a family in the neighborhood, he beat the odds and studied criminal law at Loyola University and joined the New Orleans police department in 1975.
He began his career with aspirations of being a great cop. Before long, he was exposed to a darker side of law enforcement. While partnered with a veteran, Davis first witnessed an officer violating the very laws he had vowed to uphold–and he shared in his crime. One compromise led to another, and Davis soon was caught and faced a substantial prison term. Cops in prison don’t last long. He fled.
Davis found himself a fugitive, living off the land in remote forests in the United States and Canada to elude capture. His church upbringing was abandoned in anger. For over twenty years he hid, becoming an expert survivalist. He might still be running, but through a stranger’s prayer the angry atheist realized he was weary of hiding. Slowly, he yielded his life to God and eventually gave himself in. But when the New Orleans DA dusted off his file, what would his sentence be?
Today, Robert Davis is a committed Christian and motivational speaker. He uses his extraordinary experiences to share his message of hope and redemption to both adults and children.
Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the idea and inspiration to write Running Scared?
Robert Davis: Well, my book Running Scared is not a novel or fiction, but a true story of my life. The inspiration came about because I really believe that it may help at least “one” person navigate their way in life.
JP: What sets Running Scared apart from other books in its genre?
RD: The fact that it’s not many books out their as unique as mine. The fact that I actually spent 22 years on the run as a fugitive sets my book apart as very unique.
JP: As an author, what are the keys to your success that lead to Running Scared getting out to the public?
RD: Definitely word-of-mouth with organizations like this one. Bloggers, internet book review sites, book clubs, etc, will get the word out about a book in my opinion much more quicker than any venue!
JP: As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take for you to start and finish Running Scared?
RD: It took an extremely long time to write Running Scared. I’m not an English Major or Journalist, so it took 4 years for me to get the manuscript ready. I certainly believe this is not the norm, but the exception.
It mainly took so long because I had to contact so many people to verify my recollections! I wanted to tell the truth the way I remembered it and the way others remembered it!
JP: What’s next for Robert Davis?
RD: I really don’t know. I do know that writing for me has developed immensely, and I’ve sort of acquired a passion for it. I believe that I’ll continue writing, maybe my next project will be a children’s book!

I like the idea of this author sharing the experience that he learned from the school of hard knocks with others so that maybe it can help guide them into making better choices in their life. One never knows whose life that they could impact just by sharing this experience with them. Many of us make mistakes in life, but if we can learn from them and possibly help someone else from making a huge mistake, then the bad deed’s impact is not quite as bad. I think that it’s wonderful that this author can share his ordeal with others.
I would love to read this book. I would love to share it with my blog followers and friends.
