The main goal of JoeyPinkney.com is to promote authors and their books through interviews and book reviews. Each interview and book review is as unique as the author being featured. The response an interview or a book review gets is also a unique experience.
Enter Canadian author Paul Collins. He wrote a book entitled Mack Dunstan’s Inferno. Collins was inspired to write this book based on a segment he saw in Michael Moore’s documentary “Bowling for Columbine” where Moore asks Charlton Heston about his involvement in high school gun rallies the week the Columbine incident went down in history. How did that transpire into a novel? Read 5 Minutes, 5 Questions With… Paul Collins, author of Mack Dunston’s Inferno.
Collins struggled to get the book published in his native Canada. The Canadian publishing industry is just as convoluted as its American sister (aka “The Big Six”). In both countries, getting published by a major is like trying to get drafted in professional sports without first going through the college circuit. Instead of quitting, Collins published through iUniverse.
As he sought the help of professional PR people in Canada, each person was asking for thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars to secure the media’s attention. Collins came across me through twitter. (@JoeyPinkney) After a brief chat, he paid for a JoeyPinkney.com author interview.
What happened after that was nothing short of phenomenal. The JoeyPinkney.com interview led to a reprint of the interview on OyeTimes.com. Oye! Times is a news-based website that caters to both the Canadian and American Market. From that reprint, a major iUniverse press release directly mentioned Mack Dunston’s Inferno as one of its 42,000 titles that is gaining media attention. Oye! Times featured this press release in two different articles.
Paul Collins has found success by thinking outside the box. By using my website and social media services as a springboard, he was able to be recognized in the sea of authors that iUniverse published. That mention of Paul Collins and Mack Dunstan’s Inferno lead to increased exposure. Increased exposure and recognition leads to book sales.
To quote Paul Collins: “Why is this interesting? Out of 42,000 books that iuniverse has published, the Joey Pinkney book interview led to iUniverse to select my book Mack Dunstan’s Inferno and another for a major press release which led one major publisher to post this link on its walls. This whole experience has led to the power of social media and its future. The old school of arts funding does not work anymore.” (Reference: http://h1t.it/M3wT8q)
