Imagine being born the son of a slave with the mind of a genius. That was Simmie Johnson in the years following the Civil War. After a perilous escape from lynch mobs in Mississippi, he manages to earn a PhD in physics at Tuskegee, and in his research, discovers the secret of time travel. He develops a design for a time machine, called a Chronocar, but the technology required to make it work does not yet exist.

Fast forward one hundred and twenty-five years. A young African American Illinois Tech student in Chicago finds Dr. Johnson’s plans and builds a Chronocar. He goes back to the year 1919 to meet the doctor and his beautiful daughter, Ollie, who live in Chicago’s Black Belt, now known as Bronzeville. But, he has chosen an unfortunate time in the past and becomes involved in the bloodiest race riot in Chicago’s history.

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write The Chronocar: An Urban Adventure in Time?

Steve Bellinger: I’ve been a fan of science fiction since I was 12 years old. I’ve also loved writing all my life. By the time I was in high school, I dreamed of writing the “great American Science Fiction novel.” On the way, I wrote several short stories, radio dramas and even fan fiction. Once I decided it was time to write a novel, I wanted it to be “real” science fiction and feature not just Black characters but the Black experience. Lukewarm Saint takes you into the life of Kevin Watkins, a handsome Brooklyn Educator who happens to be a strong ladies man. But what is he to do when torn between what he wants and the reoccurring feelings of guilt?

Kevin’s best friends are polar opposites: one, a born-again Christian, and the other, the owner of a gentleman’s club. Both men want Kevin to lean towards their contrasting ways of thinking. Kevin’s mother and grandmother try their best to steer him clear of his womanizing legacy – a legacy left behind by his father and grandfather.

What will he decide to do? What will it take for Kevin to make a decision? How long can a person tempt the Lord before the Lord decides to say, “Enough”? Lukewarm Saint will answer those questions and many, many more.

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write Lukewarm Saint?

K. L. Belvin: I created Lukewarm Saint to ask readers to consider where is that line drawn when making an important decision about the way they enter into and exit out of interpersonal relationship involving romance and lust. Whether you believe in God or not, there is a point in our lives when we make some critical decisions or the choices will be made for us. Continue reading 5 Minutes, 5 Questions With… K. L. Hindsight is 20/20 is a twisted maze of undiagnosed mental illness, misdiagnosis and patient abuse. This novel is a sordid conundrum of generational dysfunction, self-sabotage, and in some cases, unbridled erotica.

What do you get when you mix ten doctors, thirteen prescriptions, and five psych wards? You become immersed in the complex mood swings of a volatile teenager that eventually spirals into the full on madness of a suicidal adult. Hindsight is 20/20 is a cogent analysis of a burdened healthcare systems’ many fractured components to the extent that it dismantles the lives of everyday people.

Readers will get a hawks’ eye glimpse into the daily struggles of life with mental illness, the crippling effects of early childhood trauma, transcribed notes from a transgender woman’s experience with hospital neglect and a hilarious series of romantic fails.

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write Hindsight is 20/20?

Agyei Ekundayo: I wrote Hindsight is 20/20 out of frustration and anger. I got tired of being funneled from one broken system to the other. Therapists disagreed with one another and took out their incompetencies on my medical records.
