“The Last Shall Be First” is a short story takes you into the life of Jessica Harding. She finds that being a single parent comes with great difficulty.

Walk with her as she leaves behind the things she never should on her journey to raise her children on her own. Will she lose them forever, or will love make its way back to them?

Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write “The Last Shall Be First”?

Norlita Brown: For the past two years, I have been advocating for children. “The Last Shall Be First” is a part of that journey. I write to open the minds of parents to the travesty that some of us place on our children without ever realizing the devestation we’re wreaking all in the name of discipline. Crime reporter Nichelle Clarke’s days can flip from macabre to comical with a beep of her police scanner. Then an ordinary accident story turns extraordinary when evidence goes missing, a prosecutor vanishes, and a sexy Mafia boss shows up with the headline tip of a lifetime.

About five years after I left journalism, Nichelle popped into my head and wouldn’t leave me alone until I started writing her story. Joey Pinkney: Where did you get the inspiration to write “The Griffin Cryer”?

Hughes: My home village is surrounded by lakes and rivers. One evening while walking my dogs over fields and hills, I glanced back at the village. A mist rose from the lakes, and as I watched, it consumed every sign of civilisation. It was a beautiful sight, yet eerie. I thought: Anything could fly out of that mist, even a dragon. Then I thought: Not a dragon – a griffin! Continue reading 5 Minutes, 5 Questions With… Julia Hughes, author of The Griffin Cryer
