Norlita Brown: For the past two years, I have been advocating for children. “The Last Shall Be First” is a part of that journey. LynDee Walker: I think it came from missing things: writing and the newsroom, specifically. I was a reporter who lived and breathed news, until I became a mom. About five years after I left journalism, Nichelle popped into my head and wouldn’t leave me alone until I started writing her story. Hughes: My home village is surrounded by lakes and rivers. One evening while walking my dogs over fields and hills, I glanced back at the village. A mist rose from the lakes, and as I watched, it consumed every sign of civilisation. It was a beautiful sight, yet eerie. I thought: Anything could fly out of that mist, even a dragon.
